skygiants: Jupiter from Jupiter Ascending, floating over the crowd in her space prom gown (space princess)
And now for something completely different: like three months later, there is now a Chapter 2 of this Jupiter Ascending fic.

Eventually there may be more! WHO KNOWS. I believe I have at least fulfilled my obligation for Space HGTV.
skygiants: Ben Sisko with hands folded and goatee (diplomacy!)
In other news, I definitely didn't mean to write Deep Space Nine fic before finishing the series, and yet HERE WE ARE.

Our Bodies, Our Selves

This fic is entirely borne out of the moment when Kira agreed to move in with the O'Briens and let Molly have free run of her room, and Debi and I flinched in unison. Kira, I promise, you will want that personal space!

(And then it turned out I couldn't write about Kira and surprise physical transformations without also writing about Odo and surprise physical transformations, because, like, that literally happens the next episode. BODY ISSUES FOR EVERYONE!)
skygiants: Jupiter from Jupiter Ascending, floating over the crowd in her space prom gown (space princess)
I wrote a Jupiter Ascending fic? I wrote a Jupiter Ascending fic. That appears to be a thing I have done.

(It may end up being more of a thing, but it also may not be, so for now let's all pretend it's just one thing and leave it at that.)

The Convergence of Genetics and Quantitative Analysis

It's basically self-insert fic, in that Aleksa and Nino Bolotnikova get exactly the same degree of judgmental joy out of appending 'space' to every word they possibly can as I would in their situation.
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (batman and robin)
Parallels! I received Assessment, a super charming Gokusen fic about Yankumi and DELINQUENT GIRL GANGS, which has been the wish of my heart since my Gokusen reread earlier this year.

It was not a good day to try to go straight, Kasanoda Ayaka thought as she leaned over her fallen friend Kibayashi Kaori.

And I wrote Alterations, which is ... another Capital Scandal fic. YOU'RE ALL SHOCKED. It's about Yeong Ran and Choi Hak Hee postcanon, and if you don't know who Choi Hak Hee is, that's OK, because I totally didn't know her name until I desperately went searching for "Na Yeo Kyung's mother" on dramawiki sites.
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (Default)
I woke up this morning after three or four hours of sleep, dazedly packed my bag, and then even more dazedly went to check the Yuletide archive.

Guys! When I saw that I'd gone out to the pinch-hit list last-minute, I was feeling guilty because I was convinced I was going to be the awful and difficult-to-match person who would hold up Yuletide for everyone else. Instead I got not one, BUT TWO stories, and BOTH OF THEM AMAZING:

Finding Aid, "The Provenance Game"

Amateurs would tell you “Oh, it’s just bits of paper.” Archivists knew better. The critical difference between an archive and a pile of documents was that in an archive, you knew where things were.

GUYS. SOMEONE WROTE ME ARCHIVES PORN. (In the metaphorical sense.) I mean, "The Provenance Game" as a short story is archives porn in and of itself, which is one of the things that makes it so delightful, but this is EVEN MORESO. I'm so delighted! And political archives intrigue, to boot. >:D I'm about 90% sure that whoever wrote this is an archivist themselves -- the reference to authority controls is what convinces me -- and if not, congrats, mystery author, you did an AMAZING job of faking it.

The Queen's Award, The Summer Prince

It's music of a sort, rough and wild but music all the same. The true anthem of our city, though almost no one has heard it, being sung here in the isolated reaches of Tier Ten.

AND THEN I GOT FEELINGS AND ART AND FEELINGS ABOUT CITIES PORN. (Um, and a little actual femslash porn as well.) Someone wrote me the June/Bebel postcanon fic I have been craving, and it's everything I could have asked for. Perfectionist ladies! Artistic partnerships! Finding the balance between politics and art! IT'S SO GREAT, everyone should read it.

WHAT A GOOD YULETIDE. I'm about to go to the movies with the family for the traditional Jewish Christmas ritual so I won't get to dive into the archive properly until later, but I'm super excited to do so!

I also, for the record, received one present from my dad for Christmas -- despite the fact that we don't ACTUALLY CELEBRATE it, he decided to get gifts for us all ANYWAY and surprise us. Which is unfair and we shouted him down vociferously! Then I opened my gift.

Okay, that's fair actually, I guess.
skygiants: Sheska from Fullmetal Alchemist with her head on a pile of books (ded from book)
Everyone is SUPER EXCITED FOR YULETIDE and so am I! MY ASSIGNMENT WILL BE AN INTERESTING CHALLENGE. But also it has reminded me that I never talked about the Exchange at Fic Corner, the children's and YA lit exchange from last month. WHICH IS A SHAME because my gift was really excellent:

And Found Me Here, Secret Country trilogy

Ruth breathed out. She was, apparently, still in her own head, no matter what else might be in it, and it was possible that not all the literature she loved was sorcerous.

I asked for fic about the stuff that we don't see with Ruth adjusting to the Secret Country's weirdness and her own alter ego, and this delivered exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. It's a really beautiful little piece with Pamela Dean's exact habit of the right quote in the right time, and the right time not to use a quote, too. Also, Lady Ruth's passive-aggressive form of 'helping' is PERFECTION.

Other stuff from the archive I really enjoyed )

Also I guess I should talk about what I wrote:

Double Feature, Darkest Powers

So I ended up matched with [personal profile] evewithanapple, who requested either Derek/Chloe fluff or a femslash story about Tori and Liz. Since writing romance of any sort is not my forte, this led to a lot of flailing emails to my betas composed largely of "ARE THEY GAY ENOUGH YET???" But I did end up having a lot of fun writing ghost lesbians. Even though the title is terrible. I'M SORRY, LAURA, my inspiration ran dry! (Chloe and Derek are also in it, and I meant for it to ALSO serve as Chloe/Derek fluff, but then I got distracted by ghost lesbians.)

And, for completion's sake, since I don't think I ever linked it here, way back in August for Parallels, I wrote:

Adaptive Systems, Time of Eve

For this one I matched with [personal profile] gramarye1971 . . . whom I love dearly and whom I had matched with for From Up on Poppy Hill with a beautiful request for historical exploration of the time period that I was NOWHERE NEAR QUALIFIED to fulfill. In a panic, I devoured Time of Eve and wrote this robot-POV fic instead. Protip: robot-POV is hard to write. BUT FUN. And I'd been meaning to watch Time of Eve anyway, so I'm not actually complaining.
skygiants: Enjolras from Les Mis shouting revolution-tastically (la resistance lives on)
[personal profile] elsane has already tackled the theme of 'Marius accidentally helps the Revolution' and done it better, but here's another stab at it.

Title: Marius Rises in the Esteem of the Revolution
Fandom: Les Miserables
Characters: Marius, Courfeyrac, Enjolras. Up at the AO3 over here.

It is not Marius' fault that his friends mix their metaphors. )
skygiants: Enjolras from Les Mis shouting revolution-tastically (la resistance lives on)
I like to imagine there is one really dedicated Azelma Thenardier fan out there who spends her time sadly browsing through the Les Mis tag on the AO3 and wondering where all the Azelma-centric fic is. Lone Azelma Thenardier fan: this one's for you.

Title: And Yet Are Orphans
Fandom: Les Miserables
Characters: Azelma, Gavroche, and a couple of Ami cameos
Summary: For lack of anything better to do, Azelma pays a visit to her brother.
Notes: The standard set of Thenardier family warnings apply -- implied child abuse, canon character death, you know the drill. Up at the AO3 over here. Thanks to [personal profile] genarti for the beta!

“My other sister's prettier,” remarked Gavroche. “This one would be a red-faced bourgeois if she could.” )
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (anarkia)
I said to myself, "all right, all right, I'm back in the same fandom that I was when I was SEVENTEEN, but at least I'm not writing overwrought fanfic for it!" Cue hollow laughter.

Title: on your way up to the light
Fandom: Les Miserables
Characters: Jean Valjean, Eponine, Cosette, Marius, Gavroche
Summary: Brick AU of the 'small canon divergence leads to slightly larger changes' variety, and also of the 'I have a lot of feelings about parallels between Eponine and Valjean' variety. Eponine throws a note at Valjean; she doesn't anticipate the consequences.
Notes: Warnings for suicidal ideation. Title comes from the Mountain Goats song Amy aka Spent Gladiator. Also up at the AO3, over here. Thanks to [personal profile] genarti for the beta!

He took it, unfolded it, and read on it, in large letters written with a pencil: MOVE OUT. )
skygiants: Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle with Calcifer hovering over her hands (a life less ordinary)
Yuletide reveals time!

My assigned fic was The Young Chants, a Chrestomanci story about Christopher Chant and his expanding family.

I have been very surprised and pleased with the reception this fic has gotten! My recipient asked for fluffy family fic; I don't think she was expecting A FLUFFY CHRESTOMANCI FAMILY EPIC, and to be fair I was not expecting to write one either, but once I started, as often happens, I couldn't stop. I don't think anyone guessed me as the writer for this, which makes a nice change from last year when I was hilariously called out in the very first comment. Secrecy IS possible!

I also wrote The Rule of Cool, a Gravity Falls treat for [personal profile] wakeupnew, with shout-outs to Community and a few other things.

I've always wanted to write a Yuletide treat for Lexie, because she writes SO MUCH every year and I feel like she deserves a million treats in response! So finally a prompt of hers came along that I actually had inspiration for, and I jumped on it. I did it at the last minute in like three hours so it is not, er, the most nuanced thing I have ever written, but . . . it has ladyfriendship and velociraptors, so that's something?

Lexie maaaay have guessed me on this one, I'm not sure! Let me know, Lexie, I was cracking up when your comment came through.

Many thanks to all my betas, including [personal profile] innerbrat, [livejournal.com profile] izilen, [profile] wickedtrue, [personal profile] genarti, [personal profile] saramily, [personal profile] shati, and [livejournal.com profile] arushindoll. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME.

I'm still working my way through the archive, veeeeery slowly. Someday there will be a recs post. SOMEDAY. But I'm determined to do it, because I want to rec everything I betaed, which was ALL AMAZING.

(PS: Thank you so much for my wonderful gifts, Ione and Alona! I don't know where you are on LJ/DW, but if you're reading this, HI, YOU'RE BOTH AMAZING! Come say hello, let's be friends!)
skygiants: Drosselmeyer's old pages from Princess Tutu, with text 'rocks fall, everyone dies, the end' (endings are heartless)
I only have one scene left to do on this year's Yuletide, which I guess means it's my turn to procrastinate by doing that Meme of Yuletides Past!

Five years and fourteen ramblings under the cut! )

And that brings us to this year! Status: not bears, exactly. Maybe teddy bears? I'M SO CLOSE (and yet so far.)
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (Default)
Every time I write a fic, I'm like, "this is it! This is the most self-indulgent fic I've ever written. Sorry for everything, world."

BUT NO. NO, this is it FOR ALL TIME, I'm fairly sure. Here it is, you guys: the most self-indulgent fic I have ever written.

Title: Five Times Kyoko Did Not Expect Fannish Shipping Explosions
Fandom: Skip Beat!, with forays into Utena, Harry Potter, Portal, Labyrinth, and Princess Tutu
Characters/Pairings: Kyoko/Ren and Kyoko/Kanae (says fandom), with Yashiro, Lory, and various OCs
Summary: Kyoko deals with the challenges of playing roles in a number of different adaptations.
Note: Warnings for the fact that fandom will ship anything, including incest, teacher/student, and human/killer artificial intelligence. Management would like to state for the record that this fic is not meant as endorsement of any of the things that fandom and/or the entertainment industry do within it.

1. Utena: Extravagant Adolescence )

2. Magical Boy Wizard Harry )

3. Portal: Aperture of Blood )

4. Labyrinth of Shadows )

5. Princess Tutu )
skygiants: Cha Song Joo and Lee Su Hyun from Capital Scandal in a swing pose (got that swing)
So I've been rewatching Capital Scandal with [personal profile] shati (who has never seen it before) and the other day, after a lot of lulzy discussion on the way home, I woke up and went in to work with the opening of a fic in my head.

So I typed it up hastily and emailed it to her . . . and she emailed me back saying "I WAS WRITING THIS SAME FIC ON THE WAY TO WORK IN MY HEAD."

All of which is to say: a.) apparently [personal profile] shati and I have gone back to being interchangeable again and b.) her way funnier version of this fic will be coming along soon, I have read the beginning and then laughed out loud for five minutes straight. BUT WHILE YOU ARE WAITING PLEASE ENJOY THIS ONE.

Title: The Last Hero of the Revolution
Characters: Lee Su Hyun/Cha Song Joo, Geun Duk
Word Count: 1,417
Summary: Geun Duk disapproves of so many of his comrades' life choices.
Notes: Implied sexual content, spoilers up to episode 15 (but not THAT spoiler.)

Geun Duk had joined up with Ae Mool Dan for the assassinations. If anybody had thought to warn him about all the matchmaking, he sometimes thought he would have stayed in Russia. )
skygiants: Pemma from Legend of Korra, looking deeply unimpressed by the fact that she's covered in snow (thrilled)
So among other things [personal profile] aberration said in her Korra finale reaction post was to point out minor spoiler )

So then the path before me was prepared I guess?

268 words, post-finale, cut for minor spoilers and Leslie Knope )

I mean now I basically just want a "Republic City's Spoiler )" Crossover Drabble Fest, but I guess I brought this on myself. PLEASE TO OFFER LOLARIOUS SUGGESTIONS IN COMMENTS THOUGH, maybe someone will feel inspired to write them!
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (sokka schools you)
Well, it seems increasingly likely that tomorrow's episode of Korra is going to completely ruin my headcanon that everyone from Avatar: the Last Airbender lived to a happy old age of being cranky curmudgeons, so I am hastily posting this UNDER THE WIRE while it could still conceivably have happened!

Title: How It's Done
Characters: Toph, Katara, Zuko, Sokka, Lin
Word Count: 2008
Summary: Toph really wants to try out this pro-bending thing.
Notes: Set about ten years before Korra. Spoilers for . . . the existence of pro-bending? The existence of Lin?

Do I look like I'm here to play pai sho? )
skygiants: Nice from Baccano! in post-explosion ecstasy (maybe too excited . . .?)
I have to take a moment to do what I meant to do last week and glee out about my PURIMGIFT FIC! Because the glorious [personal profile] nextian wrote me glorious A:TLA/BACCANO CROSSOVER FIC featuring SOKKA and TOPH and ISAAC and MIRIA and it is basically the best thing in the world, and if you doubt me you should be able to tell by the titles:

Toph Bei Fong Overcomes Her Initial Misgivings To Discover Newer, Fresher Misgivings Beneath Them

Isaac and Miria Involuntarily Spread Dissension Between Two People Who Sorely Need It

Sokka Explains Things Discreetly, And Against All Odds Nothing Explodes

So basically Emma wins everything in the universe. To everyone else in the universe: sorry, better luck next time?

Purimgifts reveals also means that I can take some time to talk about Fiddler on the Roof, which I watched in order to write my Purimfic (which for the record was Chava and Hodel for [personal profile] opalmatrix, about sisters postcanon) and which I ended up with a surprising number of feelings about on the rewatch.

First of all: so Fiddler on the Roof is basically the Russian Jewish Pride and Prejudice AU, right? You have a not-very-well-off couple, and they have five daughters, and one of them turns down the well-to-do guy that their mom would really like them to marry, and one of them runs off with a slightly shady fellow who is not exactly on the right side of the law . . .

(Okay, so Perchik is a much better dude and definitely a more likeable guy than Wickham, but the fact remains that I think not being totally happy about your daughter running off with a baby Communist organizer who's being sent to Siberia for the foreseeable future is a PRETTY REASONABLE attitude for a parent to have.)

I also remember really shipping Chava and Fyedka as a little kid, because he hits on her BECAUSE SHE LIKES BOOKS and, you know, well. As an adult, rewatching, I can see a lot more of Fyedka's privilege -- man, a Jewish lady not wanting to hang out with a Russian dude is not the same thing as a bunch of dudes harassing a Jewish lady -- but I still have to admit I ship them because, well, books, and also, man, they're both so clueless and somehow that's really sweet?. They've read so many books, so they're like "WE'RE GONNA ELOPE *__* IT'S SO ROMANTIC *___* SURELY ONCE THEY SEE OUR LOVE THEY WILL UNDERSTAND!" and then once the Russians do some bad stuff they're like "WE ~CAN'T LIVE~ IN A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE ARE SO CRUEL, WE'RE GOING TO MOVE AWAY IN A ~NOBLE SHOW OF SOLIDARITY.~" Spoiler alert, kids: people are not going to be better people in Krakow than they are in Anatevka. But it's adorable that you think they might be!

Also in the movie I just really like Tzeitel and Chava's faces.

Tzeitel looks so sensible! Chava looks like SUCH A BABY! Hodel in the movie is super pretty, but she looks like a movie actress. Tzeitel and Chava look like, you know, my cousins.
skygiants: Nice from Baccano! in post-explosion ecstasy (real nice girl)
Yuletide reveals are live! I wrote three fics this year, thus officially ending my streak of writing one more fic each year than the year previous, ah well.

My main assigned fic was Nice Holystone Remains Unafraid To Throw Herself Into Explosive Situations, a Baccano! fic about Nice and Jacuzzi, and Eve Genoard, and Al Capone, and obviously a whole lot of bombs.

I got called out as the author of this almost the first day the archive opened, which, I will admit I was sort of expecting, given that it is exactly like all my other Baccano! fics in being enormously long and having a ridiculously convoluted plot full of lulzy cameos and too many puns. In short, I AM THE SNEAKIEST NINJA. (Although I laughed so hard when I saw the comment -- [personal profile] nextian, it's not fair, I didn't even know you'd seen Baccano! I guess you have probably earned some sort of fic-shaped prize if you want one though, so let me know!) One way in which this is not exactly like all my other fics: people actually make out onscreen! THIS IS A STRANGE AND PERPLEXING THING FOR ME. Generally as far as I get is people hanging around not making out due to their issues. So go me, I guess?

The other full-length fic I wrote was And Every Homestead Holds a Ghost, a Downton Abbey pinch-hit I grabbed for [personal profile] newredshoes, because a.) I love her and I wanted to write something for her and b.) I'd been eyeing her prompts for the past two months. So, uh, HAPPY YULETIDE, ESTHER! :D

I think I may have been slightly more successfully sneaky on this one, even though it's much more the kind of thing I usually write - gen, ensemble-fic, and what [personal profile] genarti called a very Diana Wynne Jonesish ghost, although thinking back it was probably based more on the Shirley Jackson I'd been reading than anything else. I spent a few days complaining to my long-suffering betas about my extreme frustration with the fact that the Downton Abbey Christmas special was not going to air until the day after fics were due; then it did air and spoilers! )

Lastly, I wrote Barriers for Hexwood as a Yuletide treat, mostly because [profile] dictator_duck and I had been talking about Hexwood a lot recently and I had it on the brain.

Barriers was a weird fic for me to write. Basically, it was my effort to show some of Mordion's severe and complex psychological trauma, while keeping a DWJ-ish style, and also trying to deal with the fact that Hexwood -- while containing absolutely nothing sexual and barely even romantic onscreen -- is nonetheless one of the most strangely sexual of DWJ's books. (ALIENS TRY TO MAKE THEM DO IT. Still not over that one.) I have no idea if I succeeded in any of this, and basically what it boils down to is a proud return to form of people hanging around not making out due to their issues, so, uh . . . happy Yuletide, world!

Edited to add: I forgot that I was also going to use this time to talk about what I wrote for Kaleidoscope, since I never did that! I wrote Soulmates Never Go Out of Fashion, a Capital Scandal backstory fic about Cha Song Joo and Woo Wan being lulzy friends that officially means that 50% of the Capital Scandal fic in existence was written either for or by me! CAPITAL SCANDAL-INATING THE COUNTRYSIDE, ONE FIC AT A TIME.

Also now I can say thank you to everyone who took the time to listen to my Yuletide (and Kaleidoscope) flailing and read my fics in their proto-form: [personal profile] genarti, [personal profile] thewickedlady, [personal profile] agonistes, [personal profile] saramily, [livejournal.com profile] rushin_doll, and [profile] dictator_duck. (Special kudos go out to Gen, who refused to let technology defeat her and wrote out a detailed line beta for my fourteen thousand word Baccano! fic THREE TIMES OVER. That is dedication far above and beyond the call of duty.)

Speaking of Gen: I may have forgotten to mention it, but I kidnapped her for an awesome weekend that included hijinks and fic-planning and the lovely [personal profile] aquamirage, and today she's driving me back up to New York, where we will proceed to kidnap [personal profile] jothra! So I have been scarce and will probably continue to be for a few days, and you can all spend your time being jealous. :D
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (Default)
I have no explanation for this except that it's [livejournal.com profile] genarti's fault.

Title: Fort Briggs and a Little Lady
Fandoms: Fullmetal Alchemist, Yotsuba&!
Characters: Falman, Buccaneer, Miles, Yotsuba
Word Count: 627
Summary: Of all the babyfic I ever thought I might possibly be perpetrating in my life, Fort Briggs babyfic was not top of the list. You probably don't actually need to know Yotsuba to enjoy this. You probably do need to find the concept of Fort Briggs + five-year-old-child inexplicably hilarious to enjoy this . . .

It had been over a decade since Fort Briggs had concluded an enemy encounter with anything less than a crushing victory. )
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (Default)
Hahaha, while I think the Fullmetal Alchemist ballroom dance fic probably still counts as the most self-indulgent thing I have ever written, this definitely comes a close second.

It was worth writing either way though because it prompted [personal profile] izilen to make some BEAUTIFUL YOKO/RAKUSHUN ARTWORK to illustrate it which you should all go see RIGHT NOW and which could not possibly delight me more!

(Thanks also go to [personal profile] izilen for the IM conversation that spurred this on to begin with and to [profile] dictator_duck for looking over this and reassuring me that it was un-terrible enough to post.)

Title: all things grow
Fandom: Twelve Kingdoms
Characters: Yoko, Rakushun, Shoukei, Suzu, Keiki
Pairings: Yoko/Rakushun, Keiki/hilarious social incompetence
Word Count: 6210
Summary: With Rakushun's graduation from university, the future shape of the court of Kei starts to emerge

'Tell me how to use you best.' )
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (Default)
A few things:

1. Much to my surprise and delight, [personal profile] winkingstar has podficced me! Specifically the Northanger Abbey snippet I wrote for Yuletide, Catherine's Fairy-Tail, which is absolutely the last thing I would ever have expected anyone to be interested in podficcing and therefore makes me even more gleeful about it.

2. Okay, I try not to be that kind of terrifying fan who runs around shoving things down people's throats (I guess those you who have literally had me shove these books physically into your hands can feel free to laugh at me here) but some of you may remember that time I read the Twelve Kingdoms books, fell madly in love with Fuyumi Ono's brain, ranted all over LJ about the perfection of Yoko Nakajima's character arc, etc.? FOR ONCE I AM NOT ALONE and now you should all go read [livejournal.com profile] izilen's Ten Reasons to Read the Twelve Kingdoms post so you can all fall down the rabbithole too.

The official news that Tokyopop is folding and the third Yoko book is therefore pretty much guaranteed to NEVER COME OUT in English actually broke me enough that I decided to do a reread on the Yoko books, this time using Eugene Woodbury's fan translations as a comparison to the Tokyopop ones I already read. In general, I think I agree with the assessment that the fan translations are better, with one nitpicky detail - I actually really like Tokyopop's decision to use 'king' as a gender-neutral term, rather than using 'empress' for the female rulers. Kingship is gender-neutral in the Twelve Kingdoms universe, and that's important to the story!

I have also now read the one Tokyopop never got around to publishing, The Shore in Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak, and - man, guys, I am SO ANGRY they never got to this one, because what Fuyumi Ono does in this series continues to be more and more impressive. This is the book where she just comes right up to the questions she's been flirting around in all the previous ones and forces the characters to acknowledge that the system of the way the world works, divine mandate of kings and all, has serious problems - makes, in many ways, no intuitive sense. And there's no way, as far as anyone knows, to reform it. Those are the rules. Break them, and your country suffers. So you find loopholes. You lawyer your way around the rules. I cannot admire Fuyumi Ono more for this - it's so brave and so fascinating to set up a system of rules for a magic kingdom and then deconstruct them in this way, and I can't think of another story that does it with quite this level of cold logic.

This is a book about how you can't just afford to obey the rules and keep your own house in order and close your eyes to what's happening elsewhere, because sooner or later it's going to rebound on you. And Yoko's intuitive sense of responsibility, the way she brings this point home and makes the rest of the rulers acknowledge it, makes me love her even more than I already did, IF THAT WAS EVEN POSSIBLE. (But we all know that I've got my #1 Yoko Nakajima Fangirl badge pinned onto my metaphorical shirt all the time, so.)

This is also, I should mention, a book in which the most important dynamic is between a lady general and the lady king she's come to ask to help save her country. Plus, a genderqueer king! (At least, that's how I read the king of Han.) And Yoko hilariously blackmailing Shoryuu into doing what she wants! And Shoukei and Suzu being background awesome! In short: DAMMIT TOKYOPOP, I would really have liked to own a physical copy of this book.
