Dear Yuletide Writer,
I am so very excited that you are writing a story for me! You should take it as a given that whatever you write for any of these fandoms will fill me with tremendous amounts of glee and gratitude. I am going to follow this up with the obligatory Things I Like list, but of course you are absolutely free to ignore anything I say here.
In general, I read for character dynamics and character development, and I love stories that showcase both of those things. Dialogue and interactions fill me with joy! I'm happy to read stories involving romance, but I don't really feel the need for anything that goes over a PG-13 rating and I'm not a fan of things that are disturbing for the sake of being disturbing. As for tone, for most of my requests pretty much anything goes - I love comedy, and if you make me cry I will undoubtedly love that too. I tend to prefer fic that sticks closer to the tone of the original, whatever that tone happens to be, but if you really want to explore a different tone in counterpoint to the original I am A-OK with that.
One last general comment: I have a deep and ridiculous love for crossovers. Obviously I in no way expect to read one, but if you have a crossover idea, even if you're not sure that I would know the crossover fandom, I say go for it!
And now for specifics!
Homeward Bounders: I adore this book for any number of reasons, but two of the things that really make it for me are Jamie's narrative voice and the surprisingly dark quality of the ending. I requested specifically Jamie-centric fic because he fascinates me as a character - I'm really interested in the balance between being genuinely a preteenager and having lived as long and experienced as much as he has, and I would love a story that explores that to any extent, whether it's set during-canon or postcanon. (I don't mean to imply I'm interested only in teenaged Jamie, though; a story about Jamie as an adult would be fascinating.) I also love pretty much every other character in the book, and fic dealing with Jamie's relationships with any of the characters postcanon would be great to see as well.
The Bloody Jack books: Oh man. I have never read any fic for this series, which surprises me a lot because there's so much that's fun in there to play with, and who doesn't like writing ridiculous swashbuckling hijinks! My personal requests are a little specific, because there are a lot of characters and there are some dynamics I am interested in more than others. Specifically, I really like the strong bonds between the girls in this series, which is something you don't see in too many swashbuckling action-adventure type stories. I friend!ship Amy and Jacky and frenemy!ship Jacky and Clarissa like crazy and any kind of story that highlighted either of those (preferably with some kind of badassery involved) would be amazing. That being said, I have a total soft spot in my heart for the bookish adorable that is Amy/Ezra as a pairing, and I also love stories where sidekick characters get a chance to shine, so I would alternately love a story that focused on those two for once instead of on Jacky's adventures.
Cold Comfort Farm: This is the only request of mine where character dynamics do not come first, because while of course I am hugely fond of all the characters in the original, what really interests me about Cold Comfort Farm is the genre parody. There are many, many more silly genre conventions out there in the world for Flora Poste to tackle, and I feel that it is almost a travesty that she never got to apply her good common sense to any of them. I don't care if it's the Starkadders getting themselves into new and exciting conundrums or a whole new set of characters for Flora to encounter or anything, what I'm really interested in here is the tone and hilarious meta!
The Ogre Downstairs: I love ensemble fics, and I love large groups that have many different complicated and twisty and strong relationships between them - especially family groups. The characters in this book are in the process of building a family out of different pieces that don't seem to fit togehter, and I am a total sucker for that. I would prefer fic that involves more of the characters than fewer, but if there are two characters you really feel need to have their dynamic explored together to the exclusion of others, hey, go for it! (Um, but I should probably specify that incest is generally not my thing, and I would prefer not even step-incest, here.)
Thank you for reading through this epic, and THANK YOU, whoever you are, for writing for me - you are made of 100% awesome.
