I think it was
4. Max, Tangled

Max the extremely angry and determined Lawful Good horse pretty much made Tangled for me as a movie; I am rather hopeful that he harkens a new era in Disney animated sidekicks, because cute helper animals are one thing and SRS BSNS ANIMALS WITH AN AGENDA are something else again entirely. Evildoers! He has his eye on you! And he will NOT REST until you COME TO JUSTICE. (I would really like to see Max vs. Batman. I am pretty sure Max does not tolerate vigilantes in his magical town.)
3. Chuchu, Revolutionary Girl Utena

Is he monkey? Is he mouse? Is he demon from the depths of hell? NOBODY KNOWS, all that can be known of Chuchu is that he is EXTREMELY TERRIFYING and embarrassingly prone to accidentally almost suffocating himself by trying to devour too much food at one time until the giant lump is dissolved with tea. Oh, and he disapproves of Akio apparently, which is enough to earn him a top five slot even if he were not hilarious in his own right.
2. Appa, Avatar
Um, do I really need to say very much here? Show me a person who did not wish for a wonderful flying sky bison of their very own the instant Appa first appeared, and I will show you the square root of a negative number. My family fondly refers to me as the one who's dead inside, and "Appa's Lost Days" made me nearly cry.

So normally I've been trying not to repeat these answers, and I already did Duck for magical girl, but - I mean, come on, this isn't a surprise to anyone, right? BEST ANIMATED ANIMAL EVER, HANDS DOWN.
(And count yourselves lucky that I didn't list Mr. Cat.)
And now, oh flist, it is your turn to bring to me your favorite animated animals! Preferably with screencaps, because I'm sure it will be useful to someone on some bad day to have a handy link to a comments page entirely filled with adorable and/or hilarious animated critters, and that someone may well be me.
