Oct. 30th, 2007 12:51 pmThe thing that surprised me most this Heroes episode, oddly enough, was how GLEEFUL I was when Hiro actually got to kiss the girl.
I mean. Yaeko was damseled, and didn't even get to use her sword, and on top of that Monica was given dumb decisions and Niki got Jessicaed again, and all that should and did fill me with feministy irritation . . . and all the same, when Hiro decided to actually lean in for that kiss, I felt the urge to rewind and watch it over and then get up and do a dance.
I do not think this is because I am suddenly invested in Hiro/Yaeko. I mean, Yaeko is sweet, but I still want Hiro to come back to the future pronto. Instead, it's the fact that for once, this whole season, Hiro is making a decision for himself instead of doing everything for Kensei - and moreover, he's hot while he's doing it. This is not just an aesthetic thing that makes me happy . . . although, I won't lie, it's that too. That shot, that moment, moved Hiro out of the space he's inhabited so far as a relatively asexual, perpetually idealistic innocent, and showed him as a much more adult character than we've seen so far, without putting him in the dark space of 5YG future Hiro.
So, in a reversal of all my usual viewing patterns, a kiss made the episode for me, and I am surprised. But pleased!

Aside from the glee, I really want to go over and watch that shot again, to see the difference in camera angle and in the way they frame Masi Oka's face, because there's definitely something very different about the way that kiss is shot and the almost-kiss with Charlie from last season.

I might be a little too invested in British bastard.

Date: 2007-10-30 10:33 pm (UTC)There will be other girls for the British bastard. *dignified* But Hiro has been waiting a season and a quarter for his kiss! Which is especially unfair compared to Peter and Nathan, who between them have made out with half the cast.
