Jul. 15th, 2014 08:23 pmWhat's better than WEREWOLF MARINES?
When WEREWOLF MARINES meet HOT CONFLICTED GOVERNMENT ASSASSINS, obviously!
Prisoner is the sequel to Laura's Wolf, first book in a planned trilogy about dyslexic Filipino WEREWOLF MARINE DJ ... called DJ because he is actually a DJ, I realize the phrasing of that is a bit ambiguous. I just want to emphasize the fact that DJ is not only a WEREWOLF MARINE, but a werewolf Marine with a side career as a DJ, because that's really amazing to me. And eventually another side career as a hot conflicted government assassin, once he gets kidnapped and conscripted by a shady branch of the secret service.
DJ's love interest is Echo, who is a way more angsty conflicted government assassin with MYSTERIOUS SUPERPOWERS and a SAD BACKSTORY and a TRAGICALLY ILL SISTER who is used to keep her in line and doing assassin things. Needless to say, Echo is the brand of angsty conflicted assassin who spends most of her time really angry about having feelings. She especially doesn't want to have feelings about her new assassin partner who's planning to run away as soon as he gets a chance and whom she may have to someday try and kill! Even if he's cute and nice and funny! UGH. WHATEVER.
I enjoyed Laura's Wolf a lot and respected what it was doing, but Prisoner actually ended up being much more up my alley. It's tropetastic in the best kind of way, where the amazingly over-the-top factor comes from the situations, and the characters actually tend to act pretty rationally within the circumstances (where circumstances involve WEREWOLF MARINES and SINISTER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.) Also, no instant attraction! Echo and DJ start out being like 'eh, cute but not my type.' This book probably falls as much or more into the action-adventure/thriller genre as it does the romance genre; lots of escapes and missions and fight scenes and gradually developing trust between partners whose primary loyalties are not the same, all of which is stuff I'm SUPER INTO.
Basically, excellent popcorn read, definitely recommended. (Except that I still fall out of the book and over into laughter every time it goes into the werewolf scent name thing. I CAN'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.)
