So I totally forgot to note when this happened, because I'm SUPER ON TOP OF THINGS, but my short-short magical realist story "Crowned" went up last month on Daily Science Fiction. If you happened to visit me any time between 2009 and 2011, you'll recognize the mural.

(In other news, for the next week I'm in Portland! Oregon, not Maine. It is deeply surreal not to be surrounded by snow.)

Portland! \o/

We don't know each other hardly at all, I know, but if you need anything from a local, I might well be able to supply. :-)

I *thought* that handle looked familiar; we have Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century as a fandom-in-common, and I am thus among those avidly waiting for more in that 22C/Elementary fusion from last summer.

OH. OH. You're the one who left me that amazing comment on that story. Who was coming from the 22nd Century side of the fusion and liked it anyway. (I honestly wasn't sure if that story had anything to offer to 22C fans, and when your comment came in it was a REALLY BIG DEAL.) (...it still is. Every time I go to reply to that comment I am all overcome again and have to go do something else. I dearly hope you understand.)

(Um, concerning updates: I've got 10K more words written -- a chapter and a bit -- but it's been on hold since August because of other commitments. Lately, I've been trying to decide whether to go the WIP route with it.)

But yes, hello! I remember you and am pleased to meet you!

The pleasure is definitely mutual; I'm a Holmes fan in general as well as a 22C fan in particular, and it's always good to find new like-minded folk who are local as well as fannish. (For the past two or three Yuletides I've been part of a small group of fen who've done write-in meetups, although not all of us were actually writing for Yuletide at the time. I think some of them also keep meeting year-round; must remember to ask about that this week.)

Also, in journal-trolling I ran across your review of the Holmes exhibit at OMSI last year, and am now much less unhappy about having failed to get to that while it was here. (Heh.)

I'm glad I went, but mostly because 1) I would have regretted not going, and 2) there's something pleasurable about the right kind of hot mess, especially in the right company. Also 3) I learned some cool things in the first room.

FYI, most of my Holmesian nattering happens over on tumblr: [tumblr.com profile] sanguinarysanguinity. Just in case that info is of use or interest to you.

To date Tumblr has not been one of my online time sinks (I have a good many of those already), but I have definitely noticed it popping up on the fannish radar.

Unless you wanted to briefly-ish meet up over happy hour, probably in downtown, I am booked on Wednesday night. :-(

Are you leaving on Thursday, or would there be another opportunity?

And I get off work at 5pm, two MAX stops south of the Hilton. Easy-peasy. :-)

It looks like we have a plan!

One minor clarification: there are technically now two downtown Hiltons, the main hotel (fronting on 6th) and the Executive Tower (across 6th, fronting on Salmon). Let's make sure we all have the right lobby....

I'll be the one in the rather worn tweed deerstalker hat.

And I will see you both there! I'll have a little travel time to get there -- prolly won't see me until 5:15, 5:20 -- but I have long dark hair, worn in a rope, and will have a big orange backpack. Skygiants has my cell number (or should have, I sent it in a pm), if you need to ping me.

[Native Portlandian pricks up ears]

Welcome to the Great Northwet! (No, that is not a tyop, as anyone presently in the neighborhood already knows.) If you have need of a native guide or would like to meet for a beverage-of-choice, send me a PM, and we'll see how our schedules fit together.

Also, there is an open SFnal book group that meets monthly at the west-side branch of Powell's Books, at which I'm a regular; the sessions are @ 7 pm on the second Tuesday (i.e. the 10th), and this month's book is Zelazny's A Night in the Lonesome October. (It's an explicit rule that you don't have to read the book to participate; we have one regular who makes a point of Not Reading most of the books, but we love him anyway. :-/)

I'm trying to visualize what "neck-deep in Powerpoint" looks like, and failing. :-)

OTOH, my Wednesday afternoon/evening is definitely open...and I'm guessing that your conference has put you either reasonably central (downtown or inner-east) or possibly out in the Silicon Forest on the west side, either of which are usefully transit-accessible. Which is useful for me, as I am in Portland's "lifestyle non-driver" subculture.

I like the story, too! And am totally down with the urge to save and hide away signs and murals one becomes attached to: sometimes, in my travels around town, I'll see that THE ICONIC SIGN FROM DEFUNCT BUSINESS has been squirreled away in someone's backyard and then I am so happy!

But I am concerned about that eyeball tree. And also showering.
