DESPERATE TIMES, man. One of my favorite anecdotes from this book is about a guy who got trapped in a foxhole during a firefight, got wounded, couldn't get out, and ... with bullets flying overhead and the battle raging over him .... shrugged, settled back, and read the book he had, which happened to be Lytton Strachey's biography of Queen Victoria.

Ooh, you should take pictures if you find them because the ones in my Kindle edition were not very good and I've been wondering what that looks like in practice. :D
