Very recently I learned that Capital Scandal aka Scandal in Old Seoul, one of my favorite television shows of all time, is now available to watch legally on YouTube.
'This is great,' thought I, to myself, 'but I'm so behind on booklogging, I can't take a whole post just to announce this and make everyone listen to my Capital Scandal feelings again ...'
But then I checked back on my DW and realized I had not substantively posted about Capital Scandal since like 2012! Many of you weren't here then!
.. and for everyone else, who has heard this story many times before, I will let the meme speak for me.
By the way, this story will be told entirely in collection of Texts From Last Night memes that
shati and I made in 2012, when Texts From Last Night memes were still a thing, because those are the images that I have on hand. God! Remember 2012! That was a time!
... ANYWAY. Capital Scandal! It's the 1930s and our plucky heroine Na Yeo Kyung is a bookstore owner who is semi-secretly a member of the anti-Japanese resistance!

Unfortunately for her, she is about to meet her love interest Sun Woo Wan, a playboy tabloid reporter who of course does not care about the revolution and yet is about to be dragged into it kicking and screaming ...

... and unfortunately for him, his best friend Cha Song Joo - the city's most glamorous courtesan by day, [SPOILERS] by night - thinks this is hands down the funniest thing she has ever witnessed and is determined to get as much trolling out of it as humanly possible!

Cha Song Joo ... how do I describe Cha Song Joo, except to say she is my favorite character in the history of television, and I am in love with her? (Don't worry, my girlfriend has also heard this story many times. She is aware.)

We deviate briefly from the format of All Texts From Last Night, All The Time to bring you some featured items from Cha Song Joo's wardrobe.

Anyway, Cha Song Joo and Na Yeo Kyeong's charming opposites-attract friendship is one of the highlights of the show.

As is the platonic soulmate relationship between Cha Song Joo and Woo Wan, ride-or-die underneath all the trolling - truly the best example of a completely non-romantic friendship between a straight(ish) man and straight(ish) woman that I have yet encountered in media.

Cha Song Joo also has a love interest, btw. His name is Lee Su Hyeon and, unfortunately for everyone, he is a cop working with the occupation.

Lee Su Hyeon also has a tragic emotional backstory with Woo Wan...

...and, to round out the angles, the leader of the revolution thinks that Na Yeo Kyung should attempt to seduce him to their side. Or possibly just that it would be very funny to watch Na Yeo Kyung attempt to pretend like she's trying to seduce him to their side.

Other plot involves Na Yeo Kyung's revolutionarily enthusiastic but ill-prepared student ...

... the other, more evil cop who is Na Yeo Kyung's personal nemesis ....

... and Woo Wan's coworkers at the tabloid newspaper, who don't actually bring much to the table except a really glorious collection of accessories and headgear, and honestly that's more than sufficient.

Shake up the ingredients and see how things escalate from 'sitcom hijinks' to 'prepare the barricades!'

And ... that's it! Watch Capital Scandal! The video quality on YouTube is bad but the content is so, so good!
...I mean, also check with me if you want ending spoilers before embarking. It's fine. We're all fine. No one's emotionally compromised here.

Date: 2020-05-08 04:01 am (UTC)Honestly it's really impressive how television as a medium for creating characters peaked in 2007 and it's all downhill from there!
