Well, this is a first: for this week's costume polls, we have a tie! Though every single one of the outfits in episode seven gathered a respectable following, the highest votes were evenly split between this look:




in which our heroine lounges and paints her toenails, and this look:




in which our heroine throws down with God.

Both great choices, both very much a mood, pleasingly representative of The Dichotomy Of Man and/or The Dichotomy of Immortal Ghost Hoteliers.

This week we hit the midway point of the drama and the field is a little narrower; Jang Man Wol's busy with the heightening drama and only has time to change into five outfits, but several of them are OUTFITS.

Starting off low-key again with this long black-and-white number - elegant, of course, but pretty casual for Jang Man Wol.




However, there's something fancy going on with the gauze around her sleeves and I don't really understand it, technically speaking, but I'm kind of fascinated by it ... does it start at the elbow and just balloon? "I'd like to look at all times like my forearms are swathed in a cloud of excess dark energy," says Jang Man Wol, to her stylist, "how can we make that happen?"

Now this is ... this is. Okay. Let's unpack. We have the high-waisted leather or vinyl ... corset pencil skirt? Is that what we would call it? Let's go with corset pencil skirt ...



We've got the ankle-ribbon stiletto heels ...



And we've got the BALLOONING PINSTRIPE BLOUSE which is really just. The pièce de résistance.



Like, this is definitely a Statement Silhouette, one has to have respect for it if nothing else, but really ... what happened here? Did someone set out to design baseball-themed fetish gear and then get a little confused somewhere along the way?

Now this look, I understand, and it is French New Wave perfection.



Okay, yes, the blouse is very shiny, but check out the adorable embroidery on the back of the hat! I'm so charmed!



I wish we ever got a close-up of the skirt pattern ... yes, it's a little matchy, but -- and maybe it's the nineties kid in me who loved ridiculous embroidery patterns on my jeans -- I can't deny that it fills my heart with joy.

Okay, enough playing around, it's time for a REVENGE LOOK.



What says 'I've lovingly created a psychologically shattering construct to destroy my enemy of a thousand years' like gold-and-green statement nails?




What says 'whoops, my love interest just HAD to give the psychologically shattering construct a hug and now he's collapsed on the ground' like stark floor-length black?



It's not the flashiest thing she's ever worn, but it absolutely gets the impact across and I honestly think she couldn't have chosen better for her day's planned and unplanned activities.

Bringing it down again a little for some falling action ... the muddy-pink dress is fine? It looks a bit like it came out of the section of the back costume closet labelled 'Generic Thirties and Forties,' but it's fine.



Like I don't know that muddy pink is really her, it makes her look a little washed out, but she's had a long and very dramatic day and she can wind down and be a little drab if she wants to. No judgment!

LOVING that French New Wave outfit. The embroidery on the hat and the scarf that is actually part of the blouse just make it.

The Revenge Look was a close runner up, though. Not loving the sleeves, but the nails almost make up for it.

The scarf-blouse is AMAZING. Who needs to wear a whole extra piece of clothing to sweep your scarf dramatically over your shoulder and sashay elegantly off? Not Jang Man Wol, that's for sure!

I keep going back and forth on what I think about the shoulder-strap on the other side but I think ... I love it? Visual interest!

I COULD ALSO ONLY THINK OF BASEBALL. It's the spacing of the pinstripes.

The top half is so billowy, too -- it really is like someone just tucked the top half of a baseball jersey into ... whatever is going on with the rest of that outfit!

She's had a lot of good nails throughout the show but I genuinely think these are the best. It would be an honor to be murdered by those nails.

It was very hard between the French new wave and the one sleeve black dress. But in the end, the shininess on the red shirt knocked it just down enough, because of the revenge nails.

It was an EXTREMELY difficult choice for me too ... if she'd kept the sunglasses on the whole time I think it would have clinched it for me, but, on the other hand, revenge nails!

Definitely Revenge Look. That was basically the pinnacle of her murderous black widow outfits, in my humble opinion--classy, simple, intimidating and she was actually trying to destroy someone while wearing it! French New Wave is a strong second place.

I love the hat and skirt SO MUCH but I love the stone-cold murder look just ... just that little bit more.

I wasn't sure anything was going to top that corset pencil skirt, and then I hit those NAILS. When you have nails like that, floor-length black is absolutely the way to go. I mean, you really need nothing else.

Here's the thing: I always have to judge based on a combination of how good the look is, by itself, and how well it suits the activity that she's dressed for, and the match in this case on look and activity was such perfection ....

I don't really get into clothing styles the way some people do, but I have to say I'm really enjoying this for the out-of-context subtitle dialogue. I have very little idea what's going on, and it's great.

This is why I try and capture whole lines of dialogue whenever possible ... because it's funny to me. >.>

The long-sleeve/no-sleeve duality on the revenge dress makes for a nifty visual and the french new wave embroidery is CUTE, but the baseball-corset-heels combo is utterly unique to my eyes.
