Oct. 20th, 2008 07:01 pmSo the play I just saw tonight was:
a.) Half in Albanian
b.) Centered plot-wise around a TRAGIC INCESTUOUS ZOMBIE ("Why are you covered in mud, brother?" "Because . . . it's really dusty and rainy . . . >.>")
c.) Involved a wedding scene wherein the traditional Chicken Dance became a choreographed dance somewhat along the lines of Cotton-Eyed Joe set to TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART. To which song THERE WAS DRAMATIC INCESTUOUS DANCING. (Note: up until this point, all the music in the play had been eerie, orchestral and Albanian)
d.) And somehow, miraculously, managed to be genuinely moving and thought-provoking and probably one of the coolest things I've seen all year.
I am not at all sure how this is possible, but it was awesome!
(I mean, I would have loved it anyways even if it had not been genuinely good, but. INCESTUOUS COTTON-EYED JOE TO TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART, GUYS.)

Date: 2008-10-21 07:57 pm (UTC)The really awesome thing about the show, actually, was something I didn't know until after, which is that it's only half-incestuous - both main characters are played by doubled American and Albanian actors, and the American couple were playing out the wacky incestuous version from a modern novelization and the Albanian couple were playing out the more traditional version, with zombies still but sans incest. So: hilarious incest AND awesome meta!
