A Shallow Post About Clothes
Oct. 22nd, 2008 11:12 amGetting dressed in the morning these days makes me really happy. I think this is because I never really outgrew the loving to dress up in costumes thing, so when I wake up in the morning and put together an outfit, I sort of feel like I am dressing up as a character for the day! So, for example, when I wear a purple tunic sweater-dress and colorful stockings and tall boots, I am in disguise as a Trendy New Yorker; or when I am wearing a black skirt with a tulle overlayer and a short black jacket and the same tall black boots, I am being a Princess Goth Ballerina; or when I am wearing jeans and a giant falling-apart oversized sweater, it is a day when I can be a Casual Writer-Type; or when, as today, I am wearing a jean skirt and a white button-down and a navy sweater-vest, I am temporarily passing for the Preppiest Prep Who Ever Prepped. It helps that I have a job that lets me dress up nicely without feeling silly but does not particularly care about the particulars.
So yes, in other words, I am super-mature about Dressing Like a Grownup. :D
And now, stealing a question from
schiarire but with a twist: who are you dressing as today?

Date: 2008-10-22 03:34 pm (UTC)But today, like 99% of other days, I am in plain black pants (sometimes it is jeans) and a nerdy t-shirt. Lazy Student Type?

Date: 2008-10-22 03:39 pm (UTC)Nerdy t-shirt = cool geek type! I do not have enough nerdy t-shirts.

Date: 2008-10-22 04:08 pm (UTC)Hair down days make me happy. My favorite is weekends when I do not even need to make the least little bit of effort at pulling back neatly and can just let it all flop.

Date: 2008-10-22 04:24 pm (UTC)Color >>> Neighborhood Hipster-dom BY A MILE. I am hoping to share in this trend by getting myself a bright red winter coat! But this may not be possible, as I have very specific requirements in my winter coat.

Date: 2008-10-22 05:06 pm (UTC)But today I am in corduroys! And... otherwise the same kind of outfit. So: gray corduroys, black stompy-heeled boots (which make me taller than I strictly need to be, but they are so comfortable), black knit shirt, chunky red cabled cardigan. And my standard silver necklace and silver-and-some-red-stone(-or-maybe-glass) earrings, and my hair tied back at the nape of my neck because I'm lazy.

Date: 2008-10-22 05:34 pm (UTC)I am very fond of corduroys also. I went through a phase in my early adolescence when I refused to wear anything but! Also: pretty-sounding earrings!

Date: 2008-10-22 06:15 pm (UTC)Even though I am Lazy Grad Student every day, I do not dress as Lazy Grad Student every day. I mean, today I am wearing one of my dingier sweaters with an equally dingy cardigan over it, over nice warm corduroys, huge tall socks and rain/moderate snow boots. The outfit says, "I do not care what my clothing looks like, for I am going to spend the day lost in thought, and it's really cold and damp in Rochester but I want to be warm and cozy so I can think deep dissertation thoughts."

Date: 2008-10-22 06:44 pm (UTC)Today I'm dressed like 23 year old me, i.e. Dorky Dresser for Comfort - jeans, grey sweater with buttons on the shoulder, my Sketchers and my hair in braids. The lady at the checkout said my braids were "absolutely adorable", which is probably not good considering I'm 28 XD

Date: 2008-10-22 07:21 pm (UTC)I'm very sad that it's turning to winter, though! Winter here with my cold tolerance basically means wearing pants every day (and as I am anti-jeans, that means ... yoga/fleece/sweat pants every day) with as many tops as I can get to fit. I want to wear colorful tights instead! But maybe my "I will pretend leggings are tights and wear boots so nobody notices" strategy will still be warm enough in the winter, with sweater skirts/dresses. I gave this question a lot of thought during my first class today. I am a good student.

Date: 2008-10-22 08:09 pm (UTC)I have also been pondering this question recently. But I am so anti-leggings on principle! And yet! Boots are the cure to many things, it is true.

I also have peanut butter and bike grease on my pants.
Yesterday I was sexy secretary from Mad Men, though. That was a much better look.

Date: 2008-10-22 09:36 pm (UTC)Sexy secretary, however, is also an awesome look. I have been too lazy to get my sexy secretary skirt dry cleaned for the past few weeks, or I would be rocking it much more often!

I have epileptic-fit-inducing black-with-green-yellow-orange-red-pink-and-white hearts-all-over pyjama pants, a green singlet, and a bright orange-and-yellow head wrap. Tomorrow I will be Last-Day-At-Work Weaves in an actual suit and jacket (I look super cute inna suit, I have discovered) and will be feeling Xtra Professional all day because of it.
I suppooooose I should start being getting-dressed-to-go-out weaves, but i have like an hour before I have to leave the house!
