Jun. 7th, 2010 12:11 pmI have discovered that THE BEST cure for grumpiness on a crampy super-humid day is to curl up on the fire escape with lots of Yotsuba&! It is impossible to be grumpy while you are reading Yotsuba&! - I seriously do not think it can be done.
Yotsuba&! is basically a series of vignettes about a hyperenergetic five-or-six-year-old who may or may not be an alien. But that is not really the point, the point is that she is hyperactive and adorable and enjoys everything 100%. Sometimes her father (adoptive, slackerish, but caring dad!), his best friend (ginormous, florist, dork) and her next-door-neighbors (three girls ranging from college to middle-school-aged and from smirky practical joker to earnest save-the-environment type) do not enjoy everything as much as Yotsuba, especially when it involves Yotsuba climbing out the bathroom window or releasing cicadas in their living room, but that is mostly besides the point. It is hard to convey exactly what makes Yotsuba&! so much fun, so you will just have to take my word on it. But you can see for yourself that she is adorable!

(It also has the distinction of including possibly the only cheerful rain scene in the history of manga.)
I am pretty sure curling up on the fire escape with lots of Yotsuba&! would also be the best cure for opening the door on your foot and ripping off most of your toenail, but sadly I cannot test this for myself right now since I have to be at work instead. Henceforth you may call me Becca of the Nine Toenails. (Not really, the toenail is still partly attached. But I want Leonard Nimoy to write a song anyway.)
