Meme thieving time!
Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.
I think you guys can guess pretty well what I know, and if I don't know the fandom, I will totally make some up. John Sheppard does not love Rodney; his true love is a piece of cheese!

Date: 2009-06-24 03:35 pm (UTC)Uh, so anyway I will give some opinions! Possibly they will be disagreed with by somebody . . .?
1. Rue is an awesome and fascinating character! This is not an opinion I have ever really seen someone disagree with, although I understand that there are a lot of Rue-bashing fics out there somewhere, which makes me very sad. Fortunately they're not in my corner of the internet and therefore I can pretend they don't exist.
2. However, I also believe that post-canon Rue and Mytho is in no way a happy-ever-after kind of relationship. I mean, the series pretty explicitly says that Mytho still has raven's blood hanging out in his veins at the end, and Rue obviously does too. Put two raven-infected people together to form a support group, and what you are probably going to get is a lot of really unhealthy codependence and emotional abuse. Which is not to say I don't ship it, because I totally do - I kind of think the fact that it's so messed up makes it extra interesting to consider.
3. But my secret confession is that even though I totally ship Rue/Mytho, and also think postseries Pique/Autor would be awesome, I kind of ship Rue/Autor even though I can't see how it would ever actually work.
4. Pique is the sanest person in Kinkan Town.

Date: 2009-06-24 04:05 pm (UTC)3. You're probably not the first to think that. (Not that I ship Mytho/Fakir or Ahiru/Rue a little bit. Because I don't. ......*cough* Nope. >_>; *whistles*)

Date: 2009-06-24 04:08 pm (UTC)1. What makes Howl and Sophie work as a couple is that they are both flawed, difficult people. I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but Miyazaki certainly doesn't seem to be a fan of it. /obligatory movie bitching
2. I don't think Megan is all that bad! I think she is probably shown to her greatest disadvantage when she's interacting with Howl, because of their personality types, and also we only see her through Sophie's eyes and Sophie is biased. But as an occasionally-exasperated older sister myself I can sympathize with her. I would probably be annoyed if my little brother moved to fantasyland without telling me too.
3. A lot of people don't like Castle in the Sky as well as Howl's Moving Castle; I agree that it's not quite as good, but I enjoy it almost as much. Cranky genie Howl! Abdullah thinking Sophie is a pain! PRINCE JUSTIN/BEATRICE, which is THE BEST OTP!

Date: 2009-06-24 04:20 pm (UTC)1. I don't actually ship Katara with anyone in the series, and I certainly don't feel the need to join one side or the other of the Great Katara/Aang vs. Katara/Zuko debate. She's thirteen or fourteen and about to become the super-hot heroine of the world; she has plenty of time to meet other guys! Or go on a nice low-pressure date with Haru and his 'stache or something. I like Zuko/Mai, and if I ship Aang with anyone it's pigtails girl from the Oracle episode.
2. I LOVE MAI. I also love Ty Lee but I feel like that is less unpopular? I think they are both great characters and among my favorites in the series, and I wish that we'd seen more of them in the buildup to the finale.
3. Relatedly: it is my firm opinion that the Boiling Rock duology are the best episodes of the series. Definitely better than the finale, which I loved, of course, because it was THE AVATAR FINALE, but thought was actually kind of crammed and didn't address some of the stuff I wanted it to.
4. Ursa is a lot more than Zuko's wonderful loving mother. For a start, she's one of very few people in the series that we know has actually killed - and, more than that, murdered in cold blood. Killing in the Avatarverse is a big deal, and to me that implies a level of moral ambiguity and stone cold badassery that I find really interesting and can't remember ever seeing anyone talk about.

Date: 2009-06-24 04:28 pm (UTC)3. Oh, dude, I ship them all. OT4! Add in Autor and it makes OT5! I just didn't think shipping Mytho/Fakir or Ahiru/Rue was that unpopular. :D

Date: 2009-06-24 04:43 pm (UTC)Okay, here are my DEEPLY CONSIDERED opinions:
1. Australia/Canada is clearly OTP! As far as I know Australia has not yet appeared in the strips, but MAYBE that is just because Australia is too busy pining for Canada? It is what I believe!
2. Sweden has never thought to mention to anyone that Sweden is actually a cross-dressed lady, which in no way diminishes Sweden's tremendous badassery. What, as far as I know there is no evidence against this!
3. England only loves America for his tiny foul-mouthed alien, who is obviously THE BEST character in the series.
(4. If I were doing serious opinions here, I would mention how much it troubles me that as far as I know canon completely ignores Africa, South America, and South/southeast Asia. Fortunately I am not doing serious opinions!)

Date: 2009-06-24 04:51 pm (UTC)Given that we've seen Sweden shirtless, there actually is evidence against that, but maybe he's just really really good at binding, idk. Oddly, I think that might make Finland even more scared of him...
Tony is superior to all! The rest of the characters are terrified of him and do whatever he says. This is trufax.
(Canon does give us Seychelles, who is a tiny African island, but she doesn't show up much at all, it's true. Although apparently in the video game, which she is the star of, she belongs to a class full of other black kids? And you are right about there being no South America or South/southeast Asia. But I did find one really good fic about various made-up-by-the-author African Nations, so at least there is that?)

Date: 2009-06-24 05:06 pm (UTC)IT'S POSSIBLE OKAY. Maybe Sweden also just kind of assumes Finland is a girl as well, and that is why Sweden keeps calling Finland 'wife'! :D
(:O . . . wow. I am kind of in awe of this new information. But that is cool! I am glad that fandom is at least addressing this a little - and it's true that Hetalia does seem to have an awesome fandom, from the very admittedly limited amounts I have read.)

Date: 2009-06-24 05:18 pm (UTC)1. The Grand Sophy: I don't ship Sophy/Charles! Not even a little bit. Actually I kind of ship Sophy/Lord Charlbury, even though their elopement is a total fake. I also do not ship Richard/Pen except in a platonic way.
2. Robin from The Masqueraders is really entertaining, but he's also kind of a jerk. Although Prudence's awesome of course makes up for this.
3. I've seen Venetia described often as one of her best, but I'm really not nearly as fond of it as I am of most of her others that I've read.
4. You can never have too many mischievous/bumbling/idiotic/scheming/name your descriptor Georgette Heyer little brothers. This is probably not actually an unpopular opinion at all, but.

Date: 2009-06-24 05:29 pm (UTC)1. I actually kind of wish Harry wasn't always our POV character. I think I would get less frustrated with him if I wasn't stuck inside his head all the time. There are definitely moments when I like him, but there are other moments when I want to kick him and get a chance to hang out with someone else for a while.
2. Dumbledore is a manipulative jerk! Um, is that unpopular? I also think he's just a bad person to be in charge of the school. He has a terrible record with hiring teachers and pays no attention to any of his administrative duties! I bet poor McGonagall does all his paperwork.
3. Cho Chang does not and has never had any obligation to like Harry, hang out with Harry, or join Harry's illegal wizard militia, and the fact that she decided not to do so does not make her a terrible person.
4. Tri-Wizard competition or not, Beauxbatons is clearly a better school than Hogwarts. For a start, their students actually learn a foreign language. That's one up on all the Hogwarts kids! Also, Fleur is made of awesome.

Date: 2009-06-24 05:34 pm (UTC)2. Well, yes.
3. I do like Venetia very much, for two main reasons: (a) Venetia and Damerel, unlike the great majority of Heyer couples, actually have sexual tension. (b) Aubrey: the brilliant/sarcastic/eccentric/awesome Georgette Heyer little brother.
I just read Unknown Ajax and was disappointed by it. Oh well.

Date: 2009-06-24 05:41 pm (UTC)2. . . . okay, that sounds kind of awesome. *_*
3. Those are good reasons! And I do love Aubrey. I didn't dislike Venetia, but it didn't stick in my mind as much - and I think the side subplots were not ridiculous enough for my taste.
. . . which is probably one of the main reasons I really did like Unknown Ajax. Eccentric/mischievous Georgette Heyer little brother and also, SMUGGLERS! Not, however, much sexual tension really.
