Nov. 20th, 2011 03:55 pmDear Yuletide Author,
First of all, thank you so incredibly for offering to write in one of these exceedingly rare fandoms! Please to follow your inspiration however it may hit you - all my suggestions are pretty much just guidelines, and I promise I will be totally delighted with whatever you choose to give me.
Some of the things that hit my cool-bits buttons include (but are not limited to): strong ladies, and ladies who are strong in different kinds of ways, and Bechdel Test-passing; ensemble-fic; sibling dynamics; found families; cross-dressing and gender-play; flawed characters working to overcome their flaws; complicated world-building; comedy balanced with tragedy and mundane details mixed in with dramatic events. As a sidenote, I also love crossovers like burning, so if you happen to get inspired by an amazing crossover idea, I totally encourage you to go with it.
I would prefer not to see character-bashing (especially towards female-characters), and although I'm happy to run with creepy or dark explorations of the universes, I'm generally not a fan of anything gratuitous. Basically, use your judgment!
Fandom: Fly By Night
Characters: Mosca Mye, Eponymous Clent
Details: Basically I just want to see more Mosca And Clent Adventures! I am incredibly invested in Mosca and Clent's dynamic, and the way that their uneasy and untrusting alliance is growing inch by painful inch into a real partnership. Anything that illuminates more about that partnership as it develops, I will eat up with a spoon.
So if you want more of my Feelings About Mosca Mye and Eponymous Clent you can check out my post about Fly Trap over here, in which I talk about what I love about them for FAR TOO LONG. That being said, while the characters are the most important thing for me here, I also love Frances Hardinge's incredible worldbuilding. If you want to play around with that and expand the universe a little more by sending Mosca and Clent (and Saracen, of course) to a totally new city with its own weird customs, I would be totally fascinated to see that! But if you'd rather have them return to Mandelion or Toll and cameo some other characters, that's totally cool too; I love basically the entire cast of both books and would be happy to see any of them pop up again. Bonus points for Saracen-related hilarity!
Fandom: Time of the Ghost
Characters: Sally Melford, Imogen Melford
Details: Time of the Ghost ends with Sally and Imogen just breaking out of seven years of misery and discontentment. Show me how they're doing it! More supernatural adventures (that barrow-king, maybe?) a bonus, but not necessary.
I am kind of all over the place in this prompt, because I have never seen any Time of the Ghost fic and there is so much awesome postcanon potential! While I specifically want to see some of Sally and Imogen's character development postcanon, I also love the dynamic of the sisters as a foursome, so add as much Cart and Fenella as you would like. You can also feel free to add in Ned Jenkins and Sally/Ned if you want, as long as the focus stays on Sally's own issues. If you want to throw in more eerie supernatural stuff for the characters to deal with, I would love to see it -- the barrow-ghost that Sally almost wakes up definitely provides a hook if you want to go that way! -- but I would also be just as happy with fic that focused on Sally and Imogen rebuilding their real lives. Time of the Ghost is an intensely creepy book, and this is probably the one of my requests with the most room to go dark and creepy with, if that's what interests you, but please make sure to treat the various issues in the text (the abusively neglectful Melford parents, Sally's abusive relationship with Julian and recent trauma, Imogen's depressive episodes) with care and respect.
Fandom: Skip Beat!
Characters: Kyoko Mogami
Details: Skip Beat! for me is all about Kyoko. I love her dynamics with Moko and Maria and would love to see something featuring their friendship; I would also really love fic about the development of her relationship with Ren in a way that respects their mutual love of THEIR PROFESSION (Ren/Kyoko/Acting is pretty much my OT3), although I should warn you that I can't do anything except laugh at his angsty backstory.
Kyoko Mogami is one of my favorite characters, in all her fabulous and complicated and RIDICULOUSLY DETERMINED glory, so seriously, anything featuring her will fill me with delight. I am especially entertained by her INTENSE METHOD ACTING, and I also just really enjoy stories about actors figuring out their characters and shooting scenes and doing their thing, so any way you want to play around with the industry stuff would be great. If you want a more specific prompt, I would be incredibly entertained by meta fic about the characters performing a jdrama adaptation of another story or fandom I know (Shakespeare! or a Broadway show! Or another anime! Or ANYTHING THAT WOULD BE LULZY) but if you are not into that, than feel free to ignore this. I am not really interested in Sho except as background comedy. I also would prefer not to get anything too dark for this one, I think; I love Skip Beat! best for its wackiness and sense of fun and for Kyoko taking on the world by storm, and that's what I'd like to see in fic!
Fandom: Twelve Kingdoms
Character: Nakajima Yoko
Details: I love Yoko enormously, and anything you write about her would make me happy, but I would especially love to see something about her and Rakushun (I ship it, but if you don't, that's okay! Their friendship is awesome too!) or Team Revolutionary Awesome Ladies with Suzu and Shoukei.
This request is pretty much copy-pasted from last year. I love almost everything about Twelve Kingdoms, but Yoko is hands-down my favorite thing about it - character growth is a huge thing for me, and I love that her biggest flaw is that she always wants to try to please everyone, that this is recognized as a flaw, and how hard she works to overcome it and grows into a stronger person. I also love how important responsibility is in these books, and how everything about the magically-destined-king-of-a-magical-land trope is complicated and not at all easy. (I've seen most of the anime, but I know and love the light novels better; however, if you only know the anime, feel free to work off of that.) If you decide to go the Yoko/Rakushun route, I will be thrilled - I very rarely see fic for them (MYSTERIOUSLY, what fandom there is for this series seems to prefer the stoic blond bishounen or the suave playboy king to the cheery giant were-rat! PUZZLING), and I always love seeing relationships that grow out of genuine respect and trust and encouragement. But, as I said, if you don't ship it that's fine! I love their friendship as a friendship, too. I also really love that Yoko gets female friends her own age, and how Suzu and Shoukei and Yoko all parallel each other in their character development - so anything about these three girls just being teenaged friends, in the aftermath of all the serious events of the series, would make me very happy. (For the record, I emphatically do not ship Yoko/Keiki, given the backstory; I emphatically do ship Keiki/hilarious social incompetence.)
Most important of all: please have fun writing this story, and I promise that if you do, I will love it. THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance, and happy Yuletide!
