skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (barrel of a gun)

I do not participate in Festivids, but I love it! I love it because a.) vids are great and b.) IT IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE TO GET THROUGH THE WHOLE THING IN LESS THAN A WEEK.

(Yuletide archive, I will defeat you. But this is not that day.)

Beauty in the Breakdown, Amelie

Remember Amelie and how pretty and wistful and optimistic and surreal it was? If you don't, that's okay, because there is this vid!

Step into your place, Blackadder Goes Forth

No, you guys, you don't understand, it's a jaunty Blackadder vid that uses World War I propaganda posters to demonstrate exactly how fucked everyone is. MORE MEN AND STILL MORE.

Brave, Capital Scandal

If I didn't have enough reasons to be excited for Festivids, the fact that every year it turns out one stunningly perfect Cha Song Joo-centric Capital Scandal vid would be more than enough for me.

Hadippa! and One Girl Revolution, Chak De! India

There were two great Chak De! India vids this year; the first one is all about Komal and the second is about all the girls but really they're both about TEAMWORK and ladies being awesome, which is coincidentally the exact spirit of the movie.

2+2=5, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

This vid is so gorgeous and features so much awesome footage of people spontaneously combusting that I forgive it almost entirely for barely showcasing lesbians. (It's a really good vid, I'm just not used to Detective Dee fanworks that aren't about lesbians!)

Just a Girl, Discworld

I'm basically reccing this one for all of Susan's perfectly timed "I'VE HAD IT UP TO HERE" bitchfaces. They are so beautiful. ;____; Never change, Susan Sto Helit!

Hand in My Pocket, Dororo

Someday soon, I will tell you all about Dororo. For now, watch this vid for the cross-dressing heroine, the wacky hijinks, the heartwarming friendship and voyage of discovery, and the giant fetus puppet.

Pandora's Aquarium, Elementary

I love the use of filters to evoke light and imagery and waves in this vid, and, of course, I love the focus on Joan.

Devils, Gormenghast

I haven't actually seen the TV adaptation of the Gormenghast books, but sometimes I still have nightmares from that time I read those books when I was MUCH TOO YOUNG TO READ THOSE BOOKS. This vid evokes that experience perfectly.

Somewhere a Clock is Ticking, The Hollow Crown

I haven't actually seen The Hollow Crown yet either . . . (shhhh! I know! SOON!) but I have read the history plays, and this vid does an amazing job of drawing out the overlapping themes of the series. And also of being pretty.

Back to Avalon, Revolution and Va Va Voom, A League of Their Own

I really was not expecting that the vids that were going to evoke the most powerful feelings in me this festivids season would be . . . the League of Their Own vids? BUT APPARENTLY THAT'S HOW IT WENT. I don't even much care about baseball! Truly, the human heart is a mystery. Back to Avalon was probably my favorite of the three, if I had to pick, but I really loved them all.

Best Friends, Don't Cry Sister, The Adventures of Lilo, and ʻōlelo hoʻohiki, Lilo and Stitch

ALL THE LILO AND STITCH VIDS WERE ALSO REALLY DELIGHTFUL. Shut up, I'm bad at narrowing things down, so you'll just have to watch them all. What torment! (I don't think "The Adventures of Lilo" is the best technically, but it is nonetheless my favorite. For the record.)

If You Want Blood and The Heart is a Beating Drum, The Losers

The first of these is basically pure essence of Losers with all the explosions you could ask for; the second is a gorgeous Aisha-centric vid in which she shoots all the things. Pick your poison!

Mayhem Is Coming, Allstate TV Ads

The most terrifyingly epic vid made from a series of insurance ads you will EVER SEE.

Just Dance, Newsies

The other thing every Festivids appears to require annually by contract is a ridiculous pop dance Newsies vid. NOTE HOW I'M NOT COMPLAINING.

Give Me Everything, Parks and Recreation

At first I thought this was going to be another great Leslie Knope vid, and then it turned out, no, this was going to be a great vid for EVERY SINGLE PARKS AND REC LADY and I just want to hug it to me forever and ever.

Sway, Persuasion

You know how the good variety of Jane Austen movies are really, really good at longing glances and people saying volumes with their eyes? This vid is, like, the Platonic ideal of that.

Strings, Robin Hood

This is the Robin Hood where everyone is animated foxes and it is a vid about how Marian loves Robin because he's a rock star. And it's SO ADORABLE!

Heart It Races, Secret of Nimh

Remember how weird and creepy this heartwarming movie about animated mice was? Whoever made this vid sure does! And now I'm feeling a powerful urge to reread Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh.

Rondo, Sense and Sensibility

Sometimes all you need to give me is a well-crafted retelling of a story in three minutes or less with a lot of excellent jump cuts and I'll be happy.

Under Pressure, Shaun of the Dead

I started out this vid thinking, "huh, I don't know if I like this remix of 'Under Pressure,'" but then I completely forgot to think about that at all because the vid was just that excellent.

Devil's Tattoo, True Grit

All I've got to say about this is oh, Mattie.

Face at the Window, The Woman in Black

I don't have the right words to say why I think this song is such a perfect choice for this vid, exactly -- the fact that the music is so light in its eeriness makes the horror of the movie that much creepier.

Titanium, Wonder Woman

I am reccing this for myself, because I know that some days, all I will really need is four minutes of Wonder Woman and assorted lady allies giving me a shot of badass to the arm.

Coeur d'Alene and Complicated, You're Beautiful

My other favorite thing to come out of this year's vid crop: there were TWO cross-dressing-boy-band-nun vids this year! TWO! Each more beautiful than the last! YOU HAVE TAE KYUNG'S PERMISSION TO LOVE HIM.

THANK YOU for the "You're Beautiful" link. I wasn't familiar w/ the canon, but I love Head & the Heart's "Couer d'Alene" and I had hoped someone would vid it, because all the tempo changes would lend themselves to story telling (which is exactly what this vidder did.) Then watching the vid made me REALLY want to see that show, and it looks like Netflix has at least 16 episodes streaming (idk if that's the whole thing or not) so I will be examining that now...

That time when I clicked on Rondo and thought I'd clicked on the Persuasion vid, so then I was trying to figure out why Anne Elliot had sisters and what on earth a treehouse had to do with it, and why there were so many different men? And then I saw Alan Rickman and said, "Oh, he played Brandon, too," and a moment later I realized I was watching a Sense and Sensibility vid so I started it over again to figure out what was actually going on? Good times.

Plus one-- 4% feels like as much of it as I can feed on this year, but I cannot let go of the idea that I must read more & more.

Thank you for posting descriptions with your vid recs! Hadn't made it to most of these yet. <3
