I did not think it was possible for you to make Niki more problematic! Really, I didn't! I wasn't expecting anything from her bits in this episode. You could have brought back Jessica! I sort of figured you would!

And then you went and made it worse.

Let's tally up Niki's personalities now, okay?

1. Niki: the 'good' one; aka, as made very very very explicit in this episode, the good wife and mother. Because she's an adult woman, so how else could she possibly be the good one? Obviously her personality need have no other facets!
2. Jessica: the 'bad' one; violent killer and bad mother. In control of her power, but that doesn't matter, because she's dangerous and a BAD MOTHER.
3. Gina: the other 'bad' one; sex object and even worse mother! Because if you're neither a good wife and mother nor a dangerous bitch, this is obviously the only option! Right? . . . Right?

Show. I want so hard to believe in you. I go into each episode with an overwhelming sense of optimism! Why must you do this to me! I am not even going to talk about DL's pointless death; I will focus on the fact that he was TOTALLY A HERO AND AWESOME and Micah's overwhelming adorableness and ignore the rest. Yes.

(And you didn't even explain where the iPods went!)

I suppose it's expecting too much to think that anyone involved with this show would bother to research MPD. Or to think of some facet of Niki that isn't either sinner or saint.

Then again, it's telling that at no point this season have we gotten any sense that anyone among the writing staff has considered the possibility of sitting Niki done with a real psychiatrist to resolve her issues. Some of that is plot point-ish, in that I think Bob wants he to stay broken. But a lot of that is the usual approach on TV to major psychological traumas. With the exception of that show on HBO with the mobster and his shrink (which I've never seen), no one on TV ever seems to be in long term therapy. Which is the only way such things can be treated.

She got a psychiatrist last year!

. . . and then beat her to a pulp, in one of the most mystifying acts of Jessica's ever. Jessica wanted the shrink! Jessica is violent but definitely not dumb! I was both confused and annoyed by that development, and in retrospect I am even more irritated, because this could have been fixed. A year ago.

And... I am too tired at this moment to get into how much I hated the Niki storyline, but suffice to say there will likely be lots of caps.

. . . honestly, did the Haitian steal all the iPods somewhere offscreen, preparatory to providing Peter with a nice comfortable iPod-free box to live in on his trip to Ireland? Because if it were not for the utter implausibility, I could be sort of down with that.

To be fair, though I don't see much point to that other than the sheer intellectual exercise of it, Niki as the 'good one' is not just wife and mother but also starting a job in sales. And Jessica's as dedicated to protecting Micah as Niki is, at least in theory. Gina's the only one who picked up and wandered off to go have fun.

I like that they gave Niki another personality, because from what I understand that's fairly consistent with how MPD works. I just wish it had been another personality who's a beat poet. Or a med student. Or a computer programmer. Or a nun. Anything that was an aspect of her personality we haven't already seen.

(...Maybe not a nun.)

Jessica's as dedicated to protecting Micah in theory, but in practice she flings him around and bruises him and lets him be kidnapped by Linderman - all the accusations that DL makes to her last season when threatening to take Micah off by himself, and that are proven to be accurate. Thus pretty much coding her as the Bad Mother.

And yes, Niki was starting a job in sales! But . . . she never makes it. And that is presented entirely in the context of Happy Family Life, which I guess is better than her being just the Happy Homemaker, but . . . not all that much better. It is not like she has a sales calling. (Though that would be great if she did. I support Niki having a dream of being in sales! I support Niki having a dream, period, that is not 'stop splitting my personalities off!')

. . . yeah. I was complaining to my friend about this, and she said, "Well, what were they going to do, make her a Ph.D?" and I was like "YES. YES PLEASE. MAKE HER A PH.D." Make her anything that is not the Sexy Bad Girl. Like Niki needed to be more of a walking Madonna/Whore complex.

I'm sort of agreeing with Batya that Jessica is a good-ish mother.She cares a lot for Micah anyway.

But despite how angry I am, I'm still going to laugh and point at everyone who would expect the writers to research MPD.They don't even research genetics and evolution, and the show's about genetics and evolution.

I would still argue, though, that Jessica is also presented as explicitly dangerous to Micah despite her best intentions - there's that bit mid-season 1 where she throws him around, which shocks Niki back to Nikiness. And then the Linderman lifestyle also leads to Micah-in-danger.

And dude, I totally didn't expect them to research MPD in the slightest. I would not have CARED if they had done something cool and interesting! *flails*
