Feb. 5th, 2015 10:39 pmFestivids continues to be my favorite fandom exchange in which I do absolutely nothing except glory in the results, and then go around and force everyone else to glory in them too. "Look at this treasure trove!" "But I don't really care much about vids --" "LOOK AT IT I SAY."
Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile, The Addams Family Films
I think the combination of song and canon pretty much says it all?
Classic, Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse
I never expected that a Barbie vid was going to be one of my favorites of Festivids 2015, but here we are. It's just so fun ... and peppy ... and there are so many colors? (But mostly pink. SO MUCH PINK.)
I Am What I Am, Batman -- Adam West 1966
There were a whole slew of great 1960s Batman vids this year -- "Kinky Neighbors," especially, certainly gets points for deciding what it was gonna do and then one hundred percent committing -- but this one was my favorite for sheer fabulous.
Dynamite, Brooklyn 99
Speaking of FABULOUS, this vid is basically a season and a half's worth of amazing physical comedy crammed into three minutes, and it's GOLD.
Semi-Charmed Life, The Craft
The nineties called, and when they did, one brave vidder was here to answer. It's the ultimate nineties teen girl witchcraft sleepover throwdown of ultimate destiny.
Shake It Off, Emperor's New Groove
Rama Llama Llama, Emperor's New Groove
Both of these vids are just kind of like "hey, remember how wacky Emperor's New Groove was and how much you love it?" and I was like "YES, YES I DO, I'll have two of each."
To Build a Home, The Fall
Gorgeous The Fall vids are a Festivid constant, and this is a worthy entrant into their ranks.
Let's Get Mischievous, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
Who doesn't want to see tiny adorable Marvel supervillains rocking the heck out?
Look Around You: Penguins, Mawaru Penguindrum
Okay, yes, but the thing about this vid is, it makes exactly as much sense as Look Around You does, and probably MORE sense than Mawaru Penguindrum. Achieving this form might have been Mawaru Penguindrum's absolute destiny (apocalypse) all along.
Once Upon a December, Mawaru Penguindrum
...but if what you would like is a really pretty vid that captures the actual emotional resonance that Mawaru Penguindrum HAS GOT I PROMISE buried somewhere in there (although again this vid provides it in ... probably in a purer, more distilled, and less traumatizing form) then this is the vid for you.
Afterlife, The Middleman
I have so many emotions about this vid! Wendy and Lacey and negotiating life after college, WHICH IS GONNA BE ROUGH, monsters and supernatural horrors from alternate dimensions or not, but it's okay because BFFs. I love these girls so! much!
Pugnantos Malos Nehos Pugnetis, The Middleman
Meanwhile, the thing about setting Middleman to "The Mounties" is that Matt Keeslar IS the Platonic ideal of a Mountie.
I'll be there for you, Pit Bulls and Parolees
I do not watch this show. I had no idea this show existed. But it's three minutes of PUPPIES and, like ... did I sell you yet ...?
Renaissance, Pleasantville
Pleasantville is actually a really pretty movie? I had forgotten that fact, but watching this vid like three times already has reminded me (and also reminded me how much I like the lead singer of San Fermin's voice. Dude has a FANTASTIC voice.)
Moves Like Yaweh, Prince of Egypt
YES, SOMEONE DID, AND IT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU THINK. AND AMAZING.
Can't Stop, Romeo and Juliet
OK, say what you will about Baz Luhrmann's R&J, but it's really visually striking and I KIND OF love it, and the same is true for this vid.
She Keeps Me Warm, Saving Face
This vid rec post has been tragically short on lesbians (unless ... you count the girls from The Craft ...) SO ANYWAY allow me to remedy that with the CUTEST ONES.
I Could Be, Selfie
These people's faces are also pretty cute.
Get Lucky, Singin' in the Rain
There are SO MANY Singin' in the Rain vids this year and they're ALL GOOD but this is the one that literally made me shriek out loud in delight as soon as I realized what the song choice was and how great it was going to be.
The Modern Approach, Singin' in the Rain
...OK and this one because the OT3 constructed reality is so well done, but seriously, they're ALL GOOD, watch them all!
Another Story, Slings and Arrows
Relationships are COMPLICATED at New Burbage, man, and this vid does a pretty amazing job at capturing that.
Shake it Off, Slings and Arrows
And now for something entirely different, Darren Nichols and Taylor Swift, two great tastes that go great together. (As a sidenote, this is the "Shake it Off" vid that I'm reccing and now I really just want Darren Nichols and Kuzco to hang out? YOU THREW OFF THE DIRECTOR'S GROOVE.)
Goodnight, Travel Well, Snowpiercer
Show Me the Way, Snowpiercer
Both of these are really solid Snowpiercer vids, and, like, look, you all know I had, let's say 'conflicted but entertained' feelings about Snowpiercer and the magical polar bear of hope, but it can't be denied the film had some hella gorgeous visuals.
Tuning Out, Van Helsing
What I love about this vid is that it manages to get all the way to the two-minute mark making you think that it has successfully taken Van Helsing -- Van Helsing! -- seriously enough to turn into a really creepy and atmospheric vid, and then suddenly HUGH JACKMAN WOLFS OUT and everything is wonderful.

Date: 2015-02-06 12:32 pm (UTC)But the hat that turns people into a penguin princess is probably just a representative of the cranky side of a magical girl force of cosmic good, so .... probably ..... not evil ....... ?
I DON'T KNOW IT'S REALLY HARD TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT PENGUINDRUM.

Date: 2015-02-06 07:43 am (UTC). . . I know it's Batman '66 and there's no point in asking why, but I really want to know which episode it is where Batman and the Joker go surfing.

Thus confirming my belief that Singin' in the Rain is an essentially unbreakable and perfect piece of art. Thank you.

So you've read this fic, right?

Date: 2015-02-06 11:15 pm (UTC)The "Look Around You" Penguindrum vid is amazing, but I still long for a Penguindrum vid to Nick Cave's "Supernaturally." One day I will learn to vid or something...
(Also now I'm really confused because I could have sworn I had a Mawaru Penguindrum icon but I can't find one so I guess not? I will have to fix that, I know I have several saved...)
