skygiantslargely c/ped from a comment I made over on kate_nepveu's journal because I want to hear everyone's thoughts: so what does everyone think is going to happen in Steven Universe s6 after, uh, all that?
Personally I'm hoping for a long slow wind-down with a lot of one-off episodes to gently show us everyone's character arcs post-crisis; some specific things I want to see:
- a multi-episode arc explicitly dealing with the colonization of other planets and the fact that 'gems love Steven and each other, even in a messed-up way' super does not equate to 'gems now have the same ethics as Steven about organic life forms'
- LIBERATE THE ZOO!!!
- Lars having a hard time re-settling into Beach City/re-settling into old relationships after his significant personality changes
- revisiting Peridot's nervousness about fusion (I don't care who she fuses with but SOMETHING needs to happen with that before the end of the show)
- I kind of want something focusing explicitly on Blue and either Sapphire, Lapis, or both
- just one low-key episode with Bismuth having some Beach City shenanigans
- Connie figuring out how her sword + heroic persona etc. can come into play in other contexts now that the corrupted gem drama is pretty much resolved
- Diamonds learn good governance from Mayor Nanefua??
- remember how Reynaldo had a one-episode girlfriend who never returned? I don't actually WANT to watch the episode where she returns because I don't REALLY care but she's literally the only character in Steven Universe who's never been referenced more than once (thoughkate_nepveu says someone spotted her in a crowd?) and it offends my sense of structure
- Cool Jacket Pearl hanging out with Cool Girl With Pink Hair
- honestly if S6 was only this last thing I'd probably be like 'yeah, justified'

Bismuth discovers Earth skating and she gets really good at it, Bismuth teaches ice skating, she obviously makes her own skates, maybe she wins a trophy or medal Peridot gets a lot of joy out of playing with

For a big arc, I would really like to see the dismantling of empire and finding other options for gem society -- if there is going to be a new antagonist, I am hoping it is someone who is eager to maintain the status quo, either because they are so invested in the gem hierarchy/ideology or because they hero-worship the diamonds and do see the change as a form of corruption. Or perhaps someone power-hungry (even if well-intentioned) who wants to take over and remake things in what they think is the One True Way? I think Bismuth knows better, but there have got to be other rebel gems (perhaps among the restored Crystal Gems) who think they could rule an empire in a much better way than the Diamond Authority?
For the smaller stories: I really want to see confident semi-adult Lars thriving in the relationships he was too scared to enter into before, but also grounded in his new identity/relationships -- and yes, some exploration of being a pink reanimated entity is definitely needed, but mostly I want to see him hanging out with the Cool Kids and finally realising that there was no secret code to be friends with them.
I am not sure I need Peridot to fuse, per se, but I would like to revisit the question of it and maybe have her explicitly make a decision -- if fusion is a romantic relationship, maybe Peridot is just aromantic? I would definitely be fine with seeing her decide to fuse and do so, also, but I don't need her to in order for it to feel like the plot point landed.
Yes, the zoo needs to be liberated, although what on earth do they do with all the humans there? But there's also that entire room of bubbled Rose Quartzes... that could be a really mind-bending episode, fingers crossed they do something with it.

Date: 2019-01-31 11:53 pm (UTC)What I really want for Lars, honestly, is a Lars-and-Sadie episode that really delves into the fact that their friendship/relationship/whatever-that-was was largely based on the fact that they both were too insecure to build any other relationships ... and now that's not the case anymore, can they make that friendship into something healthier, or do they move on into their new lives? I think either answer is a valid one, but I'd really like to see how the show deals with it.
Oh, I hadn't considered the idea of aro-equivalent Peridot, but I like it! I think I'd be happy with that aspect of her arc any way it resolved, but it definitely does feel to me like it needs revisiting.
SO MANY Rose Quartzes, and the only Rose Quartz that any of our characters have ever met wasn't a real Rose Quartz! What's THAT going to be like?
