Oct. 22nd, 2022 12:39 amDear Yuletide author,
Thank you so much for writing for me, and apologies for the lack of detail in my sign-up this year -- I had internet issues and was flailing a little to make it happen under deadline! That said, if something in this letter contradicts something that you've started thinking about based on the letter, do not worry about it at all -- in all the years I have done Yuletide, I have never failed to be overjoyed by the gifts I've received, so if you write something that makes you happy, I guarantee I will be delighted with it also.
Generally speaking I am always interested in ensemble and family stories, community-building and community dynamics, revolutionary politics, romance built on loyalty and trust, antagonistic relationships with fate and destiny, and falling in love with ghosts! For my requests this year I'm generally more interested in expanding on canon than in going AU in either plot or setting, but I'm broadly pro crossover if you have a brilliant idea for one.
Some of these canons deal with some pretty serious topics, and dark themes are A-OK if it makes sense for the story, but I tend not to be into graphic and gratuitous violence. I'm happy for romances to include sexual content but I'd prefer it wasn't the entire point of the fic.
Specific requests:
Fandom: As You Like It - William Shakespeare
Characters: Orlando de Boys, Oliver de Boys, Rosalind, Celia
Details: What is up with the Forest of Arden's impressive magical brother chilling out field? What happens if the effects fade when everyone leaves it again?
I will be honest, I requested this because I saw a production of As You Like It recently and in the aftermath we could not stop discussing this question of how and why the forest keeps fixing previously homicidal fraternal relationships within ten minutes of the homicidal brother's arrival in its boundaries! I would love a serious or comic exploration of this concept in particular -- for example, I am fascinated by the idea of Oliver realizing that he is losing those feelings of magically-imposed goodwill when he leaves the forest but not wanting to change back to the more miserable person he used to be - but in general would also be excited for a character study, a close look at various interpersonal dynamics during & after the play, or general Comical Shakespearean Hijinks focused around any of the listed characters. Would also be especially interested in stuff that leans into various complex queer themes of the play (I do tend to read Celia as pining for Rosalind but am really interested in/curious about the dynamics of a genuine romance between Oliver and Celia if you can sell me on it!) If this isn't already too much detail please do feel free also to check out this post I wrote about the production that inspired this request and engage with any of the ideas therein, especially in re: Orlando pining and the handling of the Bad Idea Comedy Couples.
Fandom: Where the Wild Ladies Are - Aoko Matsuda
Characters: Hina, Shigemi
Details: Ghost museum heist!!!
I love that Matsuda teases us with the concept of Shigemi rescuing Hina's bones from the museum and then lets us know via a background detail in another story that it happened, but I would dearly love to see it play out on the page. Feel free to bring in any of the other characters from the world of Where the Wild Ladies Are (the interconnectivity of the world is one of my favorite things about this canon) or simply tell the romantic lesbian ghost heist story of your dreams! This canon could also be very fun for crossovers, too, whether Shigemi gets assistance from other fictional criminals or other fictional ghosts (or both) ...
Fandom: The Once and Future King - T.H. White
Characters: in my haste to sign up I did not specify but I did mean any of the characters nominated, which includes The Queen of Flanders' Daughter | Piggy, The Questing Beast, King Pellinore, and Sir Palomides
Details: Would love to hear about Piggy and the Questing Beast's fun boat trip together or about how Palomides healed the Beast's broken heart!
On my most recent read, I was really struck by the fact that Piggy and the Questing Beast arrived in Orkney together while Pellinore was pining for them in The Queen of Air and Darkness, and I would love to hear about this road trip! Feel free to go AU and have this result in bonding rather than Piggy shooing the Questing Beast away from the castle, or have them patch it up afterwards; that said, I would alternately love to read your take on how the Beast ended up attached to Palomides instead. On another note, I'd also be really interested in reading anything about King Pellinore or this set of characters during the events of the back half of the book -- according to many versions of legend Palomides is also a Grail Knight, and Pellinore & Piggy's children play a big role in the Grail Quest, so where do they and the Questing Beast fit in the broad and troubling exploration of ethics in the last two books?
Fandom: 시카고 타자기 | Chicago Typewriter (TV)
Characters: Han Se-Joo, Jeon Seol, Yoo Jin-Oh
Details: OT3 with a ghost!!!!
Sometimes two reincarnated humans and a ghost love each other very much, and sometimes they love each other SO much that the humans publish novel-length RPF ABOUT the ghost, and sometimes they then all live happily ever after! OK, that last part didn't officially happen yet in canon but it was strongly implied that it MIGHT and now it can! in your fic! if you feel so inspired! This is a repeat request because my hunger for OT3 fic for this canon is never satisfied -- I love the way this show handles themes of reincarnation and reconstructing relationships out of the hauntings and mistakes of the past, so I'm particularly interested in those themes but also writing and authorship and the complications thereof (some really interesting tensions between Jeon Seol's fandom BNF days and Han Se-Joo and Yoo Jin-Oh's processing of their pasts through fiction that the show never explores!), revolutionary politics, and general ghost threesome domesticity hijinks.
Thank you again so much for writing for me, I can't wait to see what you do!
