So I mentioned genarti and I were going to be watching some episodes of the old FMA series!

FOR THOSE WHO MAY BE CURIOUS, Gen has our extremely deep and thoughtful notes over here.

(What's hilarious is how they get increasingly LONGER AND MORE INDIGNANT as a.) it gets later and later and b.) the plot gets MORE AND MORE CONFUSING. I was going to say, "c.) as we drink more," but Gen over my shoulder points out that this is a lie and we were totally sober for the last few episodes, and she is probably right. I DON'T KNOW. I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ANYMORE.

Oh, first FMA anime, you are truly a ball of confusion and weirdness. I am so glad I started reading the manga (re: the good story with actual narrative coherency) shortly after experiencing the first series horribleness.

I ... hope you'll recover from the WTF factor soon.

To be fair there's a decent possibility that it makes more sense if you're not skipping around the episodes like a kangaroo on speed!

. . . but there's also an equally decent possibility that it doesn't.

My opinion of the original FMA series (haven't seen the new one yet) is that it's something that's engrossing when you first watch it, but doesn't hold up to critical thought or examination well (and has some amazingly epic genderfail, which stands out more because most of it wasn't in the source, though that isn't perfect either...it's like going from Vampire Diaries books to Vampire Diaries show), and is increasingly "whoa, why did I love this? when you try to rewatch.

That's kind of the general impression I have. I mean, I can definitely see why it's compelling! But I was never that interested in watching or reading FMA from what I'd heard of the first anime, because I had a vague impression that it was ALL MANPAIN ALL THE TIME, so when I finally tried Brotherhood (which really is mostly just a lovingly animated version of the manga) I was so excited to find awesome ladies! And integrated humor! And complicated plot! SO EXCITING.

Youu know, I am a huuuge fan of the manga, but I have yet to see either of the anime. Are they recommendable, or are they nostalgia crack?

Well - and bear in mind that I am totally biased and unashamed of it - I really love the new anime, which is what I started with; it's very, very faithful to the manga, and really well-animated, and all around kind of awesome. The old one . . . from the five episodes I have seen, seems to be much more manpainy, much less awesome to the ladies, and OVERALL VERY CONFUSING. So take that as you will.
