Peter broke into a fit of coughing when his mother introduced her date, but he was trying to be diplomatic, so he said nothing. Nathan, however, was not. "Isn't he a little young for you, Ma?"

"Nah," said the Captain, with a grin. "If anything she's too young for me."

"I'm always telling Peter, there's something to be said for a distinguished older man," said Angela serenely.

Peter looked from the Captain's smirk to his mother's just slightly smug smile, and said, "I don't get it."

Sophie stared at the spider that Howl had just carried safely down out of harm's way. "You named it after my - my sister's granddaughter?"

And as always, when she went home, she planted another seed out back - one for every year she got older, and Colin didn't.
