Skipped last week on costume polls because, as sovay said in a different post, it's surprisingly difficult to be anything other than a news-processing-and-transmitting machine atm and that was even more true last weekend, so it was two weeks ago now that the people voted for this incredible red dress as the top look for episode nine:



However, we've only got five outfits this episode and I love some of them with the fire of a thousand suns so we're powering through! Here we go!


1.



I'm not entirely clear what's going on with this outfit but I think it's a gauzy hot pink floral shirt layered over a sleeveless black dress? Points for originality and style already -- it's not a combo I would have thought of and I think it looks great on her.





The details are neat, too -- not sure how I feel about the bifurcated scarf neck (?) but the hairpiece and extremely floofy sleeves are both A+.

We never see the whole of this dress and I don't even care, it's going in my absolute top tier of Jang Man Wol looks, because the BUTTONS ARE CAMEOS.



I repeat: the buttons! are cameos!!

OK, I can't even pretend to a lack of bias here, I've been incredibly excited about this denim extravaganza ever since I watched this episode for the first time and finally! it is here!



THE DENIM WIDOW'S CAP.




It took me forever to figure out what the gold designs stuck all over the outfit actually are, but looking from the back, I think? it's dollar signs?? also iconic, obviously, but I just keep coming back to the hat. It is the galaxy brain of widow's caps and I love it so, so much.

Okay right! We're not done! She did wear other outfits this episode!





I get kind of a Western saloon-keeper vibe from this look? A new influence for her and I absolutely don't hate it.

For this last outfit we're back to brooding black-and-white, with a faintly feathered theme.



At first I thought the off-the-shoulder shirt might be the same one she'd worn with the denim extravaganza, but after a closer look I realized that this one, unlike the other, has some kind of furry muppet cuffs to match her skirt feathers ... it's those small accents that really pull an outfit together. She's absolutely correct to own two near-identical versions of the same shirt, the furry muppet cuffs with the widow's denim would perhaps have been a little too much.

Yayy I'm so glad you're continuing this! These costume polls have been a great source of levity and distraction for me.

I was tempted by the cameo buttons dress because the jewelry there was (as always) wonderful and the sheer concept of cameo buttons deserves to be rewarded (though I'm not a huge fan of the wide black placket even if conceptually I understand they're there to help show off the cameo buttons)...but then the denim extravaganza outfit happened with its *black netting* on a *denim black widows cap * and I was SOLD.

I would not under any circumstances wear the denim extravaganza, but I recognize it as a thing of superlative beauty.

Nor I, but it's just ... it's really transcendent. The woman who wears that outfit is afraid of nothing!

The denim with the hat on and the jacket off is a really fantastic look, even apart from how absolutely bonkers the concept is.

The jewelry is great, too -- the little pendant is much simpler than she usually wears but it sets off the V-neck perfectly. And the chunky gold earrings!

Are the sides of the saloon dress' skirt piece longer on the sides than the middle? It looks like that to me.

I think so, yeah -- pretty sure it's a deliberately uneven hem.

Obviously I went with denim extravaganza, but that last dress is definitely a callback to Grace Kelly in Rear Window and I love that. The stylist is clearly having the time of her life.

Oh dang good catch, I knew it reminded me of something but couldn't put my finger on it! Of course it's Grace Kelly!

It's the contrast between that gorgeous black top and the dollar-sign matching denim skirt and jacket that really make it for me.

Jang Man Wol's real fashion genius is she always knows when to pair absolute simplicity (the top! the necklace!) with absolute DRAMATICS (EVERYTHING ELSE.)

These are all fantastic looks, but that denim widow's cap—the netting—that is so far beyond next level as to render the very concept of levels invalid. And then you get to the whole rest of the outfit and that is a mic drop rendered in the form of fashion, is what that is.
