skygiants: Nice from Baccano! in post-explosion ecstasy (maybe too excited . . .?)
I meant to do a whole Festivids rec post before leaving for Costa Rica, but then I ran out of time, so it'll have to wait. Instead I would just like to take a moment to shout out to my wonderful gift vid: Take It Off, which combines two of my absolute favorite things, bouncy dance pop music and the 1970s film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Swing dancing! Witchcraft! People turning into rabbits right and left! EVERYBODY TAKE IT OFF so all your clothing can become enchanted weaponry in the fight against Nazi oppression! It's so good, everyone please watch it immediately.

In other news: I'm going to Costa Rica until next Sunday, internet status questionable! Everyone have fun for the next week and try not to get hit by a blizzard.
skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (fakir you freak)
So I guess it is Yuletide reveal time! First of all: thank you forever to [livejournal.com profile] genarti, [livejournal.com profile] areyoumymemmy, [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes, [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon and [livejournal.com profile] dictator_duck for various levels of betaing and support and handholding; y'all are awesome.

For my original assignment, I wrote Etude: Composition, a postcanon fic which has the dubious distinction of being the only Princess Tutu story that I am aware of to incorporate the phrase "Aliens Made Them Do It." For this, I am sorry. (Sort of.) It's also postcanon Fakir-tries-to-write-Duck-back-to-a-girl fic, which I once swore I would never do and therefore am somewhat sheepish about, but I have to admit was a total guilty pleasure to write.

Then, feeling a little worried that ambiguous genre-play might not in fact be what my original recipient was hoping for out of her Yuletide Princess Tutu fic, I also wrote the treat Entr'acte, a small and relatively fluffy piece about the changing dynamic between Fakir and Duck set right after the end of the first season.

My other Madness treat was Catherine's Fairy-Tail, a ridiculously wordy Northanger Abbey ficlet that really is just a prologue to a greater unwritten story - I saw an amazing prompt for Catherine getting to have real gothic/fantasy adventures, and wanted desperately to write something for it, and realized very quickly that if I kept going it would end up a MILLION YEARS long. So maybe I will come back to this over the course of the next year.

Lastly, in other travesties for which I am not really sorry, my other full-length story (for a pinch-hit) was The Barkosigan Saga: Mirror Dog. Hilariously, this is by far the most popular Yuletide fic I have ever written, but I can't really claim any credit for it - my recipient jmtorres came up with the brilliant idea to do a Vorkosigan episode of Wishbone, the 90's television show of my childhood heart about a Jack Russel terrier enacting great works of literature, and I just elaborated. (Well, and picked Mirror Dance specifically, which may make it extra special, but hey - I watched a lot of Wishbone to research for this story, and if they can do Count of Monte Cristo without killing anyone off, I can absolutely do a G-rated Mirror Dance.)

Also hilariously, the day that I snatched up this particular pinch-hit, [livejournal.com profile] genarti signed online and said "Hey, Becca, I saw a pinch-hit on the list that reminded me of you!" This is probably proof that Gen knows me too well. (To be strictly fair, she was actually talking about jmtorres' other request, which was a really cool Girl Genius prompt that I probably would have written if I had had time to bone up more on canon.)

AND SPEAKING of [livejournal.com profile] genarti: it seems it has become a tradition with us that on the occasions I kidnap her, it is time to watch RIDICULOUS THINGS. This time around: Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie! In which former Prime Minister of Japan Junichiro Koizumi plays this guy:

For a lengthy writeup, see over here. All I can tell you is that watching this was an AMAZING LIFE DECISION.
skygiants: a little girl spreads out arms and wings and beams up towards the sky (wings glee)
HAPPY YULETIDE MORNING, guys!

I am full of joy and well-being towards the world, as is appropriate. I mean, I would be anyway, being home on vacation and all, but especially so because I received two amazing full-length fics:

A Midnight Clear

Oreldo froze. He'd told Martis about Oland's living arrangements, but no one else. He didn't know why, except it seemed like that was the big guy's business. The last thing he wanted was the lieutentant to go barging over there playing rescue, which is exactly what she'd do once she learned the facts.

This is Pumpkin Scissors fic, which fills my heart with SO MUCH JOY - there is no fic for this fandom, guys! I think this just doubled the output! - and makes me want to dive back and reread (what there is of) the manga all over again; I never thought I would get fic for this canon, which makes me extra thrilled.

Practical, and Magic

Miss Price wasn’t afraid of anything, not even the Germans, not once she could look them in the eye. She didn’t even notice that clergy man who was always about with his greedy eyes; she just kept right on shutting doors in his face. Well, until Mr Browne punched him in the nose one day, and then he stopped knocking on the door every Wednesday and Friday. Carrie thought Miss Price would have gotten aroundlove to turning him into a rabbit sooner or later, once the clergy man had done something really rude. Carrie would have done it the first time she laid eyes on him, if she could have.

BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS FIC! About Carrie being inspired to be awesome by Miss Price being awesome! This is why I love Bedknobs and Broomsticks so much, guys. THIS IS MY HEART.

Now my mother is clamoring to watch the Doctor Who Christmas concert on BBC America, which is, in fact, the most gloriously dorky thing imaginable; soon we will be going ice skating, followed by a trip to the movies, followed by tons of Chinese food. Jewish Christmas is the best.
