skygiants: Kyoko from Skip Beat! making a mad flaily dive (oh flaily flaily)
YULETIDE YULETIDE YULETIDE! I got all my stories (two full-length and a treat) finally tweaked to my satisfaction and uploaded in complete form late last night, and in return I was lucky enough to receive two INCREDIBLY DELIGHTFUL stories! Both of them are warm and fuzzy and make me want to wrap myself up in Yuletide joy.

One, Two Three, and Four, Skip Beat!

Big sister’s friend had a very big presence sometimes, strong and vibrant and electrifying-- not as good as Kyoko’s, which was much purer--but when she scowled Maria could almost see the blackness behind her. Ah, it was great, but why was she projecting it at big sister?

Maria! And Kyoko and Moko! and SPONTANEOUS ARABIAN DANCES! This story is ridiculously sweet, guys, it is all about ladies having careers and being friends and tiny dark-aura-loving little girls hanging out with their fake big sisters. Also Lory rides a camel, but that's not exactly new, I guess, just an example of how well this author captures the wacky feel of Skip Beat!

From the Tiniest Ripple, Pumpkin Scissors

"It beats killing people, that's for sure. Am I right, Randel?"

He blinked and glanced at Alice before nodding at Oreldo. "You're right."

I was surprised to see two stories in my Yuletide waiting list; I was EXTRA surprised to have one of them be Pumpkin Scissors, which was one of my last year's requests that I was super sad not to have room to request this year! WHICH SOMEONE MUST KNOW, sooo I have my guesses about who the mystery author of this one might be. Anyway, Alice & Team plant a community garden, FOR THE PEOPLE, and it is exactly as adorable as it sounds.

Happy Yuletide to everyone! And happy holidays, too, whichever those might be.
skygiants: a little girl spreads out arms and wings and beams up towards the sky (wings glee)
HAPPY YULETIDE MORNING, guys!

I am full of joy and well-being towards the world, as is appropriate. I mean, I would be anyway, being home on vacation and all, but especially so because I received two amazing full-length fics:

A Midnight Clear

Oreldo froze. He'd told Martis about Oland's living arrangements, but no one else. He didn't know why, except it seemed like that was the big guy's business. The last thing he wanted was the lieutentant to go barging over there playing rescue, which is exactly what she'd do once she learned the facts.

This is Pumpkin Scissors fic, which fills my heart with SO MUCH JOY - there is no fic for this fandom, guys! I think this just doubled the output! - and makes me want to dive back and reread (what there is of) the manga all over again; I never thought I would get fic for this canon, which makes me extra thrilled.

Practical, and Magic

Miss Price wasn’t afraid of anything, not even the Germans, not once she could look them in the eye. She didn’t even notice that clergy man who was always about with his greedy eyes; she just kept right on shutting doors in his face. Well, until Mr Browne punched him in the nose one day, and then he stopped knocking on the door every Wednesday and Friday. Carrie thought Miss Price would have gotten aroundlove to turning him into a rabbit sooner or later, once the clergy man had done something really rude. Carrie would have done it the first time she laid eyes on him, if she could have.

BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS FIC! About Carrie being inspired to be awesome by Miss Price being awesome! This is why I love Bedknobs and Broomsticks so much, guys. THIS IS MY HEART.

Now my mother is clamoring to watch the Doctor Who Christmas concert on BBC America, which is, in fact, the most gloriously dorky thing imaginable; soon we will be going ice skating, followed by a trip to the movies, followed by tons of Chinese food. Jewish Christmas is the best.
skygiants: Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist with her arms over her eyes (one day more)
[livejournal.com profile] jothra is evil. Why is this? Because she has cruelly hooked me on an ongoing manga that has only five volumes out of twelve published in English, no scanlations anywhere online, and no promise of further volumes until October at the very earliest. ;_; JOOOOOOOOO! *shakes tiny fist*

I've seen Pumpkin Scissors compared to Fullmetal Alchemist multiple times, and though the actual stories are very different it's pretty easy to see why. The main story of Pumpkin Scissors picks up three years after a cease-fire has ended a long and brutal war between the Empire and the Republic, and focuses on the inevitable problems that happen when towns and farmlands have been destroyed by constant warfare, large numbers of former soldiers are wandering around unemployed, and the whole country is in the middle of a serious economic depression - and that's without factoring in an easily-abused oligarchical class system and an apparently super-sinister military. Our protagonists are Imperial Army State Section III, an army unit that's dedicated to war relief and reconstruction. Most people (including the rest of the army) see them as pretty much a useless token effort shuffled together for the sake of propaganda, but the second lieutenant in charge of the unit is determined to prove that RECONSTRUCTION IS SRS BSNS and make a significant difference.

I think the focus on reconstruction and the aftermath of war, rather than on dramatic battles, is really interesting; I also like the characters, and, as this is a visual canon (with an anime adaptation) that means mini-picspam time!

Under the cut for length and images. )

The manga kind of whiplashes between comedy and seriousness and full-on nightmare fuel; as it happens, that is a whiplash I thoroughly enjoy. All of the army conspiracies and evil scientific experiments and rising class tension also seem to be developing into a plot that is really interesting, and that I would LIKE to know more about but probably will not be able to FOR YEARS. Damn you again, lack of translations! (I will totally be watching the anime, but I think it only covers the parts I have already read. ;_;)
