[profile] moonyazu9 asked me for my Top Five Sidekicks.

. . . which turned out to be harder than I thought. I mean - what exactly defines a sidekick? If you're talking about superheroes it's easy enough, but after that things get foggy. In a way, I think 'sidekick' is more of a headspace than anything else. If you have a character who thinks of themselves, their primary role, as follower/helper to another character, okay, they're a sidekick. But the stories I tend to have the most respect for are the ones where you can tell that everyone's a protagonist in their own head - you know, the way most people are.

So for this one I've tried to pick characters where their sidekick status is both pretty incontestable, and says something interesting about the trope.

This is cut for length. )

So those are some of my thoughts on sidekicks! I would be extremely interested to hear any of your thoughts on the topic.

Aside from OTPs, [livejournal.com profile] lacewood also asked me for my Top 5 Platonic BFF Pairings, which is an awesome question but tricky because I am going to try not to overlap with any of the BFF pairings I talked about when I did my top five BFF moments. To make narrowing it down easier, I am also very strictly ruling out anyone I think might be even a little bit not entirely platonic. (SORRY KYOKO AND KANAE, but that nosebleed disqualifies you from the running.)

For over-long babbling about FRIENDSHIPS, click the cut! )

As always, you are cordially invited to tell me about your own favorite platonic fictional BFFs!
skygiants: Akio from Utena, with text 'my period of erotic sibling representation is over' (hey mister chairman)
For pretty much every request on the Fannish Top Fives, you can take it as a given that my reaction falls affectionately somewhere on the spectrum between "you know well how to play to the judge" and "YOU ARE ALL WEIRDOS." *laughing*

Okay, Top Fives #1, from [livejournal.com profile] nevacaruso: top five crossover characters you'd like to see Akio seduce, and why. (So basically, after going quite happily for several years without posting at all about Akio's seduction habits, this journal has apparently become ALL AKIO SEDUCTION, ALL THE TIME. I am sorry! I promise after this no more posts about Akio sexin' for a very long time.)

I limited myself for this to canons which I had not already written up in this dream crossover list, because redundancy! Which did help me narrow it down a little.

Images are occasionally shirtless but as worksafe as anything involving Akio! )

. . . . so yeah, I'm done. But feel free to contribute your own top lolarious Akio seduction!
skygiants: Wendy from the Middleman making faces at Ida (neener neener)
So I finally got my hands on the comic version of The Middleman: The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse! And spoilers )

However that does not mean I love the show overall any less, and, to prove it, a poll:

[Poll #1576252]
skygiants: Autor from Princess Tutu gesturing smugly (let me splain)
Admit it, you missed me spamming you with five zillion Tutu icons, didn't you! Although actually this time around it is only 70% Tutu icons . . . and 30% my first, shameful attempts at Middleman icons. MORE ALMOST CERTAINLY TO COME.

Most of these are bases, but feel free to add or modify however you would like to turn them from 'generic' into 'awesome'. I only ask that if you do, you come back and show me because I am terribly curious!

It's IBARW! When it comes to deep and thoughtful posts - of which I have seen a ton of awesome ones this year already - I think it is probably better for me to shut up and listen and read, and which I am very much doing.

Fangirling, however, is something I am always happy to do - so without further ado, I present to you some TV ladies who are both a.) completely awesome and b.) not white. I am not even saying 'top five' because there are no rankings, just the first ones I could think of and easily find images of.

Cut for length and images, but you should click through anyway. )

That is a whole lot of awesome up in there, right? SO MUCH awesome, one post cannot contain it! (No, really, it can't - I had to cut off at five because I'm at work and can't do this all day, much as I would like to, but there are so many more not even contained here. Martha Jones, Jessie from SCC, all of the Ugly Betty ladies - the list goes on and on. And that's only the shows I know, without delving into Sun from Lost or Cam and Angela from Bones or anyone from any of the five million police procedurals I am not watching. My point is, they're out there. And they're amazing.)

One more thing, however, to point out: almost all of these ladies are the only woman of color on their main casts. Some of them are in fact the only person of color in their entire cast.

Now take a moment to imagine the sheer awesome that would be two of these ladies in the same show together.

Better yet: imagine a whole show with this cast.

Whitewashing fiction doesn't make it stronger - it does the opposite. Obviously many, many people have said this before, and said it better than me. But it bears repeating anyways.
